Oakhurst Weekly
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
With two weeks now under our belts, our hallways are humming and our students’ minds are already blossoming with big, new ideas!
Keep an eye on your inbox soon for an email introducing each class’s room parents. I look forward to supporting our room parents and celebrating all the wonderful ways they’ll engage you as volunteers and partners in your child’s learning.
There are so many exciting events on the horizon here at OAK! Please take a quick look at the calendar in this newsletter and bookmark our school website so you don't miss a thing.
Warmly,
Jennifer Triplett
WEATHER AND PE/RECESS
With warm temperatures forecasted for today and the coming days, we want to share a quick update on how we keep our students safe during hot weather.
Our school district closely monitors both outdoor temperatures and the heat index throughout the day to guide decisions about outdoor Physical Education classes and recess. When heat levels reach conditions deemed unsafe for outdoor activity, students will move to air-conditioned indoor spaces for modified activities and supervised free play instead.
We encourage you to send your student to school with a refillable water bottle and comfortable, lightweight clothing as this warm stretch continues.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school community healthy and safe!
OAKHURST SLT ELECTIONS THIS FALL
Oakhurst's School Leadership Team (SLT) is an important crew that is created and guided by CSD's charter. SLT members - including administrative, staff, parent and community representatives - operate as a governing body with the purpose of maximizing school-level decisions. Parent representatives are an elected position and serve two-year terms. There will be two open parent seats this Fall; we will hold an election August 26th-September 2nd to fill those positions.
The most important requirement of an SLT member is to have an honest desire to contribute to the educational experience and learning of all children at Oakhurst Elementary. We hope you will consider being a part of this very important work! Those interested should complete this form along with a short bio to add to our voting form. This form and the bio will be due on August 25th. Thank you for your support!
Feel free to contact any of our current parent representatives with questions or for further information: Jessica Brooks: jessica.brooks@csdecatur.net, and Tom Chen: thomas.chen@csdecatur.net

SHARE YOUR READING JOY WITH FLAT OAKIE!
Flat Oakie is a reading buddy! Throughout the year, we encourage students to read with Flat Oakie. You can submit photos of your child reading with Flat Oakie to be featured on the news show via the QR code on Flat Oakie. We look forward to seeing lots of Oakhurst Owls reading with their buddy, Oakie!
All students received a Flat Oakie in their take-home envelopes at Meet & Greet or on the first day of school. If you need a replacement, click here.
STAR TESTING
During the weeks of August 3 through August 14, we are administering the STAR Math (K-2), STAR Early Literacy (K-2), and STAR Reading (2nd grade) tests. STAR is a computerized adaptive test that helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth.
Students take the STAR tests in the fall, winter, and spring. By taking it three times a year, teachers and parents are able to see how their student is growing in the areas of reading and math throughout the school year. We will use this data to help us make informed instructional decisions for our students.
The tests will be administered by classroom teachers and proctors in their classrooms. STAR family reports will be shared through Thursday communication folders following the conclusion of testing.
If you have any questions please reach out to our Instructional Coach, Gail Hardwick.
