SPAPSD Families,
October brings a vibrant energy to our schools as students dive deeper into their learning and establish strong daily routines. Classrooms across the district are filled with curiosity, active problem-solving, and collaboration. Thank you for your continued support at home, which plays an essential role in reinforcing positive habits and keeping our learners focused.
Building on these daily habits, this time of year naturally allows our students to explore new interests and grow academically and socially. Our schools offer a wide range of opportunities to get involved, including music and fine arts, athletic programs, and co-curricular activities. If your student is interested in participating in extra-curricular activities, please reach out to your school's main office for details on sign-ups and available options.
We also have a significant academic checkpoint on the horizon, with the end of the first quarter arriving on November 4th. This milestone provides a natural opportunity to review student progress and ensure everyone stays on track for a successful year. Please continue to reach out to your child's teachers for any questions or concerns you may have as we partner together through the fall.
With appreciation,
Cory Hirsbrunner, Ed.D.
Superintendent
π« Steering Our Schools: Recapping the Board's Work
The Stevens Point Area Public School District School Board held its Regular Board Meeting on Monday, October 12, 2026.
Following roll call, this year's Student Senate Representative, SPASH Junior Trey Mabon, gave a report recapping the 2026 Homecoming Festivities, current standings and awards for fall sports and it's players, outline of the PreACT and PSAT testing schedule, and a save the date for the upcoming SPASH Musical: Matilda.
A communication report was provided by Sarah O'Donnell, director of communications, followed by updates from around the District provided by Assistant Superintendent Chris Nyman, on behalf of Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner.
To recap the current progress of the #PointProud Task Force, MD Roffers gave an update to the board as the group is now in the 'Specific Advice' phase.
Consent Agenda
The Board approved the following items as presented:
Business Services
Presented by Director Kurtz, the board approved the Bus Bid and Acquisition report, which allows for the purchase of nine 2028 Type C buses and one 2026 nine-passenger van from Ascendance Truck Centers of Marshfield. After trade-in credit, the total net cost is $1,169,500.00.
Additionally, Kurtz spoke on the resolution authorizing a taxable tax and revenue anticipation promissory note for cash flow purposed in the amount not to exceed $3 million. It was approved as presented.
The board then received the 2026-2027 General Budget Overview, showing that the Total School Levy is projected to increase approximately 3.1%, compared to 16.39% last year, and the Levy Rate (Mill Rate) is projected to decrease from $6.94 to approximately $6.73. The General Budget Hearing will take place on October 26.
Human Resources
Presented by Director Bakunowicz, the board approved the move of our Employee Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision Services, from M3 Insurance to a one-year contract with USI Insurance, effective November 1, 2026, with the option for additional one-year renewals subject to annual performance review by administration. Transitioning to a flat-rate fee is projected to generate approximately $80,000 in annual savings for the District.
Educational Services
Revisions to Policy 5515, 7440.01, and 8310 were presented by Director and Assistant Superintendent, Chris Nyman, and approved by the board.
Future Meetings
The School Board will hold its next Regular Meeting on Monday, November 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bliss Educational Services Center.
The Educational Services and Business Services/HR Committees will meet on the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

π #PointProud Schools 2040 Task Force Continues Its Work
September Task Force Update
At its September 16 meeting, the #PointProud Schools 2040 Task Force reviewed βPath 1: Moderate Change,β its first alternative long-range facilities scenario, along with three early learning approaches.
Path 1 focused on rebalancing enrollment among current elementary schools, including to address looming capacity issues in southern school buildings. It did not suggest grade-group reconfiguration and deferred any suggested elementary building closure or repurposing to beyond 2035. Members described the approach as relatively manageable and low-disruption, while questioning whether it goes far enough to address declining enrollment, underused facilities, financial pressures and opportunities to enhance student programming.
The three early learning variations were:
Continue the current 4K model (ELa): Least disruptive, but largely maintains current conditions.
Expand full-day 4K to all elementary schools (ELb): Strongest support, with potential to improve family access, student opportunities and building use; questions remain about staffing, space, renovations, attendance boundaries and cost.
Establish an Early Learning Center (ELc): Potential benefits in consistency and specialized services, with significant uncertainty about transportation, family impacts, costs and meaningful savings.
Across the eight small groupsβ evaluation, Path 1/ELb received the most positive responses overall, while Path 1/ELc generated the most βunsureβ responses.
Other themes included exploring grade configuration changes, particularly moving sixth grade to the middle-school level; attendance-area changes; elementary building closures or repurposing; and virtual learning, alternative elementary programming and childcare partnerships.
The Task Force will review additional paths at subsequent meetings. District administration and consultants are investigating membersβ requests for more information about whether current junior high buildings and SPASH could accommodate more students without substantial costs or programming compromises.

πDylan Koss Honored with Mandana Bliss Award
The Stevens Point Area Public School District is proud to announce that Dylan Koss, science teacher and track coach, has been selected as the October recipient of the Mandana Bliss Award.
Mr. Koss was nominated by students Emma and Avery, who shared how he goes out of his way to support his students both in the classroom and on the track. βHe doesnβt just teach science, he teaches his students to work hard, be confident, and never give up,β they shared.
The students also highlighted how Mr. Koss stepped in to offer encouragement during difficult moments, believing in them when they doubted themselves and inspiring them to build confidence.
βI was having a horrible day and I was sure I was going to fail my science test. Mr. Koss believed in me and reminded me that I could do it.β
βMr. Koss is the best teacher anyone could ever ask for and he really deserves this award,β they added.
Congratulations, Mr. Koss! Thank you for going above and beyond to inspire confidence, foster resilience, and support our students every step of the way. We are incredibly fortunate to have you a part of our #PointProud team!
