Cossack Connection
August 2025 - SVHS & SVMS
Expect Excellence
From the desk of Mr. Bolstad
Dear Sioux Valley Middle/High School Families,
Welcome back, Cossacks! I am delighted to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the entire Sioux Valley Middle School and High School staff. We hope your summer was enjoyable and restful. Our staff is excited to work with you to provide an exceptional educational experience for your child. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for the fall semester:
Tuesday, August 5th – Registration & Picture Day
Join us in the MS & HS Commons. During registration, parents will update emergency contact information. Students will receive their class schedules, locker assignments, and have their school pictures taken. Athletes and fine arts participants must purchase a $25 activity ticket. Students can also deposit money into their lunch accounts, pick up their yearbooks, and place a future order for the 25-26 Cossack Yearbook.
High school students will receive their laptops during registration, while middle school students will receive their Chromebooks in the first week of school. Please remember to read the Laptop Policies and sign the Acceptable Use Agreement on the last page. Each student will have a $20 user fee for laptop use. Please note that this is a user fee and not insurance for the device.
We have staggered the registration times based on the first letter of the student’s last name as shared in the welcome back packet. However, if your assigned time doesn’t fit your schedule that day, feel free to come anytime between 8:00-12:30 or 1:00-5:00.
Thursday, August 14th – Back to School Night from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
This event is an opportunity for families to meet the teachers, visit classrooms, bring in school supplies, and organize lockers. Tissues may be brought to your first-period teacher or the office.
Tuesday, August 19th – First Day of Classes
Classes start at 8:20 am each day. On Wednesdays, school will end at 1:45 pm. Please see the information on the Student Responsibility Period below for dismissal time on other days of the week.
Important Updates to Note
Attendance and behavior points have been separated for increased clarity. Points earned will no longer reset at the semester.
We will be implementing a Student Responsibility Period (SRP) from 3:10 to 3:30 PM for all middle and high school students each weekday, with the exception of Wednesdays. SRP is designed to provide students with the support they need to stay on track academically and grow in responsibility. This is a 20-minute, structured time at the end of each day for students who need help catching up on work, making up missed assignments, or receiving extra instruction.
Here’s how it will work:
If a student has one F or two Ds at midterm, quarter, or semester, they’ll be assigned to SRP for the following midterm period.
All 6th graders and freshmen will start the year in SRP through the first midterm to support their transition.
Teachers can assign SRP as needed on a day to day basis for missed work, reteaching, or to revisit expectations following behavior issues.
Parents can also request SRP if they’d like that structure for their child. For some students, SRP may be part of their IEP or intervention plan.
Attendance is required for those assigned. If a student skips SRP, it’s treated the same as any unexcused absence.
If your student isn’t assigned to SRP, they may leave at 3:10 or stay in the commons under supervision until 3:30.
We’ve built SRP into our schedule because we believe in providing proactive support and opportunities, and we want students to take ownership of their learning. SRP will also allow us to hold student leadership meetings, pep rallies, and academic check-ins—without taking time from core instruction.
I encourage you to review these updates and other procedures in our 6-12 handbook.
We’re excited for another fantastic year at Sioux Valley! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff or contact the office. We truly value your involvement and support. Together, we will inspire, guide, and support our students as they grow and succeed.
With Cossack Pride,
Mr. Bolstad
SV Secondary Principal

Welcome New SVMS and SVHS Staff!
We’re excited to welcome Mrs. Andreasen as our new Middle School & High School Administrative Assistant!
Her heart for students and belief in the impact of a great school experience inspired her to join the world of education. From front office coordination to daily student connections, she’s here to help make each day run smoothly for staff, students, and families alike.
On her days off, you might find her lakeside with a good book, at the theater, or rocking out at a live concert. Speaking of music… Fun fact: In high school, she was the lead singer for a band and even toured with POD, Relient K, and The O.C. Supertones on the “See Spot Rock” tour!
If she could become an expert in any skill, she’d master professional music mixing. Her favorite movie? The Princess Bride — a true classic.
We’re so blessed to have her energy, creativity, and experience at Sioux Valley!
We’re excited to welcome Mr. Bellis as our new Band Director at Sioux Valley!
Mr. Bellis pursued a career in education because of the meaningful connections formed with students and colleagues — and his deep love for music. He believes in teaching life lessons through music, creating a powerful blend of inspiration and creativity in the classroom and rehearsal space.
On a day off, you’ll likely find him relaxing, enjoying sports, or diving into a good movie. A fun fact? He’s related to both Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson!
If he could master any skill instantly, he’d choose creativity, which fits perfectly with his passion for music and the arts.
We’re thrilled to have your energy and expertise on the Cossack team, Mr. Bellis!
We’re thrilled to welcome Mrs. Benedetto as our new Middle School English Language Arts teacher!
Her love for literature and writing was sparked by her junior year English teacher, Mrs. Swier, who inspired her to pursue a career in education by encouraging her to be herself and embrace her voice.
When she’s not teaching, Mrs. Benedetto treasures time with her daughters, Roma and Rosie, especially library visits and family trips to the lake or farm.
Fun Fact: She used to compete in rodeos during middle and high school!
If she could become an instant expert in any skill, it’d be cooking—and she’s currently enjoying books like Where the Crawdads Sing and anything by Emily Henry or Carley Fortune. Her favorite shows include Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, and The Office.
Welcome, Mr. Blees!
Sioux Valley is proud to welcome Mr. Blees as our new High School Special Education Teacher. His passion for education began with a PE teacher who left a lasting impression, and now he’s excited to give back and help students grow every day.
Mr. Blees enjoys relaxing with sports or a good TV binge on his days off — especially The Office. He once played percussion and still dabbles on the drum set. If he could become an expert in any skill, it’d be mastering every instrument he picks up — inspired by a guy he saw on YouTube years ago. Welcome to Sioux Valley, Mr. Blees!
We’re excited to introduce Mr. Hilbert, our new Middle School Science and Social Studies Teacher!
Mr. Hilbert was inspired to become a teacher by the lasting impact of a few influential educators from his own school days—relationships so meaningful, he still connects with them today. He now hopes to build those same lifelong connections with his students at SV.
On a day off, you’ll likely find him starting with a good coffee shop visit before hitting the golf course. And speaking of golf— Fun fact: Mr. Hilbert has not one, but TWO hole-in-ones!
If he could instantly master any skill, it’d be making only one trip to Lowe’s for home projects. (Now that’s a superpower.)
Welcome to Sioux Valley, Mr. McDermott!
Mr. McDermott joins the Sioux Valley staff as our new Middle and High School PE and Health teacher. Inspired by his father’s example as both a teacher and coach, Mr. McDermott is passionate about connecting with students through wellness and movement.
Outside of school, he enjoys watching football, hunting, fishing, and collecting sports cards. If he could master any skill, it’d be hitting a golf ball — a sport he calls “the most rollercoaster activity out there.” His favorite show? Game of Thrones — winter is coming, but so is a great school year! Welcome to the Cossack family, Mr. McDermott!
We’re excited to welcome Mr. McMullen as our new Agriculture and Building Trades teacher!
With a passion for Career & Technical Education, Mr. McMullen is driven to make a direct impact on the next generation—connecting classroom and lab learning with real-world opportunities. He’s especially excited to bring the community into the fold through guest speakers, site visits, and hands-on experiences that go beyond the textbook.
When he’s not teaching, you might find him spending time with family and friends, working on projects, or getting inspired at Runnings or the hardware store.
Fun fact: Mr. McMullen and his wife have identical triplet daughters—Letty, Rylee, and Allie—so life at home is always lively!
If he could instantly become an expert in anything, it would be becoming the ultimate “jack of all trades”… which, of course, would require lots of tools.

Student Responsibility Period
We’re excited to announce a new addition to our daily schedule starting in the 2025–2026 school year:
Beginning this fall, we will implement a Student Responsibility Period (SRP) from 3:10 to 3:30 PM, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
SRP is a structured, supervised time at the end of the day designed to support students who need extra academic help, time to complete missing work, or reteaching opportunities. It’s one more way we’re reinforcing responsibility and helping students stay on track for success.
Key Points:
Who is Assigned to SRP?
Students with 1 F or 2 Ds at midterm, quarter, or semester
All 6th graders and freshmen (for the first midterm period only)
Teacher or parent referrals based on academic needs
Schedule:
SRP runs from 3:10 to 3:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday
There will be no SRP on Wednesdays
Attendance:
Mandatory for assigned students
Missing SRP without an approved excuse will be treated as an unexcused absence
Dismissal:
Students not assigned to SRP may leave at 3:10 PM or remain in the commons under supervision
This added layer of support will help students stay on track with learning and work completion while giving teachers and parents another tool to help ensure academic success. SRP also creates space for leadership meetings, Check & Connect, and other support services—without cutting into class time.

📞 Join Our Phone Policy Review Team
As our staff has been engaging with The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, we’re committed to looking and thinking critically at our school’s cell phone procedures in light of growing concerns about mental health, distraction, and social development in youth. Haidt and other experts emphasize that smartphones in schools can impair attention, reduce meaningful interaction, and contribute to anxiety and social isolation. He advocates for phone-free schools to support healthier childhood experiences.
Who We’re Inviting
We'd like to invite student leaders from Student Council, NHS, FCCLA, FFA, and Junior Honor Society, as well as interested parents, to serve on our Operations & Logistics Team. Together, we’ll review our current phone practices and explore how our school can best support focus, engagement, and wellbeing for every student.
How to Get Involved
If you’re passionate about helping shape these procedures, we want to hear from you! Please reach out to Mr. Bolstad at tyler.bolstad@k12.sd.us to express interest or ask questions.
Thank you for helping us ensure that Sioux Valley continues to be a place where students can learn, grow, and connect—without unnecessary distractions.
Join Our Climate Team – Celebrate Our Cossacks!
Are you a parent or guardian looking for meaningful ways to contribute to our school community? If so, we’d love you to join our Climate Team, a group dedicated to lifting up students and staff through recognition, morale boosters, and positive experiences.
What the Climate Team Currently Does:
-
Recognizes Students of the Month across grade levels
-
Hosts the Activity Fair, connecting students with clubs and extracurriculars
-
Designs incentive activities like milkshakes for the grade with the best attendance
Providing meals and snacks for staff, such as supper during conferences or the SOUP-er Bowl
-
Creates opportunities to celebrate staff and students when their efforts shine
Because we no longer have a booster club or a PTO at the secondary level, our school team often covers these celebrations from personal resources. We’re raising funds to ensure these small‑win moments continue—and your involvement can make a big difference!
How You Can Help:
-
Whether you can attend meetings, volunteer at events, or offer financial support, you can make a real difference. We meet about once a month on Wednesdays between 2:00–4:00 PM for roughly one hour.
Please complete our quick Climate Team Interest Survey to let us know how you'd like to get involved:
Family engagement is essential in making our school climate a positive and inviting place for everyone. Together, we can amplify student success, foster belonging, and celebrate the quiet but important achievements that often go unseen.
If you’re ready to help—or simply want more details—please email me at tyler.bolstad@k12.sd.us.
24/7 Access to Your Student's Progress
To provide real-time access to attendance and grades, we have the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. Many parents/guardians and teachers are embracing technology tools like Parent Portal on Infinite Campus, Google Classroom, and email communication as alternatives to in-person conferences. These tools offer information most relevant to parent/guardian interests.
If you need help connecting to the Parent Portal to view your child's attendance and grades, please feel free to contact Karen Steege in the MS/HS Office. We're here to assist you with any inquiries you may have.
