A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Greetings PES families and community members,
Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a wonderful week off. We were excited to see some warmer temperatures outside this week. Students have been exploring the different effects outside due to warming weather and melting snow; building dams, moving wood chips, and watching the water flow.
Celebrations!🥳
Last week we celebrated the 100th day of school. Kindergarten students made headbands that read, “I am 100 days smarter.” Other classrooms made laminated bookmarks with the same message. It was a fun way to think about all the learning that has happened in the last 100 days of school.
The Officer SALTY program started in 4th grade this week. Emily from KELT, was here to teach kids about the different types of mollusks. They also spent time mapping out the waterways that surround Maine’s coastline. Students in fourth grade will be diving into clam dissection next week with Officer Salty. The Officer SALTY program is a great chance for students to experience hands-on learning.
We have some exciting new saltwater tank inhabitants at school. We received three different size lumpfish and a red sea anemone. Students have been enjoying visiting our new creatures and learning about how they survive in the sea. The lumpfish moves around by scooting its fins. They also use their fins to suction-cup themselves to surfaces. The sea anemone has opened up to show its tentacles - some have over 200. Some students thought Ms. Anna might have put a red pepper in the tank. 🤣
Read Across America Spirit Week! 📚🇺🇸
Next week, we will celebrate Read Across America, a national celebration to get kids excited about reading. At school, we will be reading books connected to five states; Minnesota, California, Florida, Texas and Hawaii. On Friday, we will have some special community readers join us in classrooms. For grades 3-5, please check student’s folders for an at school and home read across America challenge. Students in K-2 will have a similar reading challenge to complete at school and home. Thank you for participating in the fun as we celebrate one of life's greatest gifts - READING!
Social Emotional Learning!
After 100 days of school, we have really seen all that our students can accomplish. We are so proud of where they started and where they are now. HERE is a link to a short video from our SPOTS. Students work so hard every day, it is important for them to have some down time, take some risks and experience independence. They truly are amazing, and their accomplishments should be celebrated. Just one positive compliment a day can make a huge difference in children’s emotional intelligence. Social emotional learning doesn’t just happen at school, it happens everywhere.
Next week, we will welcome in March with more fun. Please reach out if you need anything at all. Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us.
Best regards,
Nina Willette, Principal
