Summer Ideas for Families
As we head into summer, we know that kids need time to relax, recharge, and enjoy being kids. But did you know that even a little learning over the summer can make a big difference when school starts up again?
Here are a few simple and fun ways to help your child stay academically sharp during the break:
1. Read Every Day
A trip to the library can be an adventure! Let your child pick books they’re excited about. Even 20 minutes of reading each day can build vocabulary and comprehension skills.
2. Make Math Practical
Include math in everyday life—measuring ingredients while baking, estimating totals while shopping, or tracking scores in games. Apps like Prodigy or Khan Academy Kids are also great for practice.
3. Write for Fun
Encourage your child to keep a summer journal, write letters to family members, or create their own stories. Writing boosts creativity and literacy!
4. Explore the Outdoors
Turn hikes, trips to the park, or even your backyard into learning experiences. Collect rocks, identify plants, or just ask open-ended questions like, “What do you notice?”
5. Use Screen Time Wisely
Balance fun and learning with educational games, documentaries, or virtual museum tours. Websites like PBS Kids, National Geographic Kids, and Storyline Online are great places to start.
6. Visit Educational Places Together
Whether it’s a museum, national park, aquarium, or even our North Bingham County Historical Park, these outings spark curiosity and offer great opportunities for learning through discovery. You don’t need a lesson plan—just let your child’s questions lead the way!
7. Set Goals Together
Help your child set a few achievable goals for the summer—like reading a certain number of books or learning a new skill. Celebrate their progress along the way!
Most of all, enjoy the time together. Learning doesn’t have to be formal to be powerful—it just needs to be consistent and meaningful. Wishing you all a summer filled with sunshine, discovery, and a little bit of learning, too!

Bond Update
This bond resolution reflects our commitment to meeting the needs of our growing student population. Our current high school was designed for fewer students and no longer accommodates the demands of modern programs and learning spaces. The proposal also includes plans to expand Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities and add an auditorium that will serve both our students and the greater community.
Your feedback is invaluable in this process, and we appreciate the opportunity to hear from you. Our next public bond meeting is scheduled for May 12 at 6:00 pm in the Shelley School District Boardroom (Shelley Library).
For those unable to attend in person, we’ve included a link below with key information covered in the meetings.

Substitute Shortage
Want to help your school? Sign up to be a substitute!
Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to your child's school? Do you enjoy working with students and have a flexible schedule? If this sounds like you, becoming a substitute teacher could be a fantastic opportunity to get involved and make a difference!
We’re always on the lookout for caring individuals who can step in when a teacher is out of the classroom. The process is simple: just complete the Substitute Application, then come in for a meeting with the superintendent. After a state-required background check and board approval, you’ll be all set to go. Plus, we offer training materials that you’ll be paid to complete.
Your support can make a big impact, and we’d love to have you on board!
