ROTARY YOUTH MERIT AWARDS
Congratulations to Elloisa Ronquillo (6th grade), Christian Miranda (7th grade), and Austin Sabangan (8th grade).
These students have been nominated by their teachers to receive the Rotary Youth Merit Award for Semester 1, sponsored by the Rotary Club. Students who receive this award are recognized for their outstanding service, dependability, and leadership at Kodiak Middle School and in the Kodiak community.
Sixth grade student, Elloisa Ronquillo has been nominated by teachers as the Semester 1 Rotary Student. She has a strong work ethic which is evident in all her classes. She has a 4.0 average for having earned straight A’s during quarter 2. She was selected as the recipient of our 6th grade quarterly character award for “kindness” as one of our core values at KMS. A quiet leader, she sets an example for others with her responsible and attentive nature in all classes. Elloisa has a passion for community service, most recently demonstrated when she volunteered for a sixth-grade fundraiser and led the group for 2 hours, happily making Italian Sodas while her peers enjoyed the event activities. We are honored to have her as a student and to recognize her as the first Rotary student of 2025.
At Kodiak Middle School, we are proud to recognize 7th grader Christian Miranda as the Rotary nominee. Christian consistently demonstrates his dependability by giving 100% effort in all his endeavors. The student body can always count on him to be a patient and attentive listener. He serves the student body with dedication, actively helping to implement school rules in a fair and supportive manner. Students feel comfortable approaching him with their suggestions, knowing he values their voices. Christian's commitment to service is evident as he assists with Friday Night Lives and other school activities, ensuring their success. As the Vice President of the student council, he showcases exceptional leadership by delivering morning announcements with clarity and enthusiasm. He organizes and participates in meetings, fostering an environment of collaboration and positive change. His genuine kindness shines through in every interaction, as he is always eager to lend a helping hand. Christian Miranda embodies the qualities of a true leader and an exemplary student, making him a deserving Rotary nominee.
The 8th grade team is pleased to nominate Austin Sabangan as a First Semester 8th grade Rotary Student. Austin demonstrates strong character through his leadership as Student Council Secretary during meetings and at Student Government sponsored activities. Austin’s notes are detailed and complete. He maintains his integrity and responsibility through a strong work ethic, and a willingness to serve and support others. He volunteers weekly after school picking up the trash from teacher’s classrooms in the 8th grade hallway. We are happy to list Austin Sabangan as the first 8th grade Rotary Student of 2025.

MRS. LEISURE'S 6TH GR SCIENCE CLASS
Students developed models to recreate the natural occurrence of rain shadow. Following lab procedures, students created their own watercolor to represent the ocean, they used a paint brush to flick watercolor, representing precipitation, onto one side of the mountain they made from cardstock. As the “precipitation” continued, students noted that the color was only able to reach one side of the mountain, and the other side remained dry – similar to rain shadow. Student completed their lab by writing a connection summary.
Students worked cooperatively playing as estuary explorers to learn how humans make positive and negative impacts on the unique water system.
Students developed a working model to recreate high and low air pressure – in a FUN way! Students drew festive or creative art on gloves and followed lab procedures to then recreate high and low air pressure. After, students wrote about how their models represented high- and low-pressure systems.
