First Grade's Weekly Update
Empowering a Love of Learning
Week of: October 12-16
🌟 What We Learned This Week! 🌟
We had a great short week of learning! Our students worked hard to build new skills, share their thinking, and make exciting connections across all subject areas.
📚 Phonics:We explored open syllables and learned that when a syllable ends in a vowel, the vowel usually makes its long sound. We practiced recognizing open syllables and continued building our reading skills with our high-frequency words: be, he, me, she, we, by, my, go, no, and so.
📖 Reading:We read persuasive books and learned how to identify the author’s purpose. We discussed how authors try to convince readers to think, feel, or do something!
✏️ Writing:We continued working through the writing process to make our stories even stronger by adding details. This week, we focused on using verbs to describe actions and help bring our writing to life.
🗺️ Social Studies:We explored the physical characteristics of different locations and learned about natural resources. We discussed how the land and resources around us help shape the places where we live.
🔢 Math:We practiced using a variety of strategies to add and subtract within 20. Our mathematicians worked on solving problems, explaining their thinking, and finding strategies that work best for them
🔬 Science: We investigated pushes and pulls and explored how forces can make objects move, change direction, speed up, or slow down. We enjoyed thinking about how these forces are part of our everyday lives!
Next Weeks Learning
What we will be learning:

Writing: Review common nouns, proper nouns, adjectives and verbs
Social Studies: Earth's natural resources
Math: Using strategies to add and subtract within 20
- ten frame, number line, making 10, related facts (fact families), number bonds
Science: Investigating push & pull

Homework
All homework in First Grade is optional. There is a video you are able to watch for further instructions. Below you can find the word list for word building (Wednesdays) and the dictation words & sentences (Tuesday & Friday). Phonics is a great way to build fluency of segmenting and blending as well as work on handwriting skills.
Phonics Weekly List:
Word Building- give student letters (can just use small pieces of paper) and have them build the words and then write the words in a journal.
Words: hate, gate, rate, late, mate, wipe, pipe, ripe
Challenge: Are there any other words you can make?' Can you write a sentence using these words?
Dictation: Say the word/ sentence out loud. Do not segment the sounds for the student, they will then write the word/sentence independently in their journal.
Dictation Words: dime, bone, kite, slide, cape, robe
Dictation Sentence: He had a big bite of the cake. I will go on the slide with my cape.
Challenge: Write an additional sentence that makes sense with the given sentence.
Writing Process
Students will begin by choosing a topic from their “Writing from the Heart” activity and using that topic as the main idea for their brainstorming. During the brainstorming stage, students get their ideas down on paper using pictures, words, or a combination of both. The goal is to generate ideas and think about what they want to include in their story.
Once their ideas are organized, students move into the drafting stage, where they begin turning their brainstormed ideas into a complete story. As students work through the revising and editing stages, they are encouraged to read their stories aloud. Reading aloud helps students make sure their written words match what they want to say and allows them to notice areas that may need to be changed or improved.
During both revising and editing, students use a colored pen, pencil, or crayon to make their changes. This helps them see and celebrate the work they are doing to improve their writing. After students have shared their revised and edited story with a teacher or peer and received the “go ahead,” they are ready to move on to the final stage: publishing and sharing!
Students take pride in creating a finished piece of writing that they can share with others.
Place Value/ Base Ten
Representing Numbers in Multiple Ways
Number Bond: A number bond shows how you can compose (put together) parts make a whole. We can use number bonds to decompose (break apart) numbers and compose.
PART + PART = WHOLE or WHOLE-PART=PART
Expanded Form: Expanded form is a way to show the value of each digit in a number. We break the number apart based on its place value.
6 tens:60
3 ones:3
Base Ten: Base-ten blocks are math tools we use to build, represent, and understand numbers. They help students see the value of each digit and how numbers are made.
Decomposed: Knowing that within a rod there are 10 units, and I can decompose (take apart) that rod to show 10 units.
Represent Another Way: Using the new decomposed number, I can use place value, number bond, expanded form or base ten to represent those parts, but my total did not change.
