Current Events
Dear Families,
This past week the staff has been involved in pre-service planning and professional development. We are more than ready to get school underway and finally welcome the children! I did want to let you know that Linda Smith has returned to the school as a para-educator. She will be working primarily in the K/1 classroom. We feel so fortunate to have her rejoin the staff.
School bus update: I trust that you all got the news yesterday about the unexpected change to having just one route in the morning. The bus route is listed below. I am not sure if there is another plan in sight, given a driver shortage, for the future; I will be following up with the district office this week. If you can bring your children to school, please do. Combining the route means not only a long ride for some students, but also a full bus, including MUHS and MUMS students.
After school transportation: Be sure to notify Shannon Minor if there are any changes in your child’s regular after school plans well before the end of the day. Please call the school (802-545-2113), text the school cell phone (802-349-5305) or email Shannon: sminor@acsdvt.org. We check messages frequently.
Meals (breakfast & lunch) information: Once again all school meals served to youth (up to age 18) will be FREE. Students will order their meals as they settle in each morning. The menu for each week will be linked in the newsletter should you wish to go over it with your child ahead of time.
Breakfast for the first day will not need to be ordered as an ample array of breakfast choices will be available.
REMINDER: Indoor/outdoor clothing and gear - All students (K-5) need the following:
Sneakers - especially for P.E Tuesdays and Thursdays to ensure safe movement. Students will not be able to participate in P.E. without sneakers.
Best planning of all: Please send your child to school with sneakers or other shoes that are made for running and jumping starting on Day 1 and every day. The classroom teachers incorporate indoor and outdoor movement activities throughout each day. Students often choose to wear footwear that doesn’t lend itself to active play. That’s okay, but please be sure they also bring active-play shoes, as well as boots for rainy and snowy days.
A complete change of clothes (yes, for all grades!) including socks and underwear (to be kept in their backpack) - various spills and muddy play are part of school life.
Rain boots, rain pants and rain jackets.
Snowboots, snow pants, winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves.
We do have some outdoor clothes and extra sneakers on hand but their use should not become habitual. Please help your student become responsible for bringing the gear they need for the day. Thanks for your help with this.
Attendance: Please build the habit of consistent attendance.
If your child is going to be absent due to, for example, illness or a medical appointment, please contact the classroom teachers and Shannon Minor as soon as possible.
In Vermont, children between the ages of 6 and 16 are required to attend public school, an approved independent school, a home school program, or another approved educational program for the full number of days that school is held (ACSD - 175 days) unless they are excused from attendance as provided in state law. (Note: While enrollment in kindergarten is not required, if students enroll in an ACSD kindergarten, they enroll for the program as offered which is the full 175 days.)
The superintendent may excuse, in writing, any student from attending school for a definite time, but for not more than ten consecutive school days and only for emergencies or for excused absence requests aligned with the following:
physical or mental illness of the student;
family emergency or death in the family;
student’s medical, dental, mental health, or substance use treatment appointment;
family observance of religious holidays;
legal activities, such as a student’s court appearance;
driving examinations;
college or other postsecondary program visitations;
pre-enlistment or deployment activities of the student or the student’s parent or legal guardian;
other reasons with written approval of the superintendent
Any excused absence requests for all or part of the school day for three or more days must be approved by the Superintendent, who may request justification or certification for any excused absence request.
Lunch volunteers: If you would like to volunteer to help with lunch prep and service (11:00-12:00) please sign up here for August/September dates. We need volunteers for this Friday (8/28) and next Monday (8/31). No experience needed! If you are new to volunteering, you will need to apply here.
