SEAL CLASS UPDATES

SEAL (Social Emotional Academic Learning) is a trimester long Enrichment class that each School Counselor teaches to their assigned grade. Every student at BMS takes SEAL each year.

GRADE 6

In SEAL the theme for 6th grade is "Growth Mindset". Students explore this theme through a variety of units.

A major area of focus for the 6th graders is communication skills, response styles, and strategies for dealing with difficult emotions and conflict.

Click here for a more indepth explanation of what your students are learning!

GRADE 7

In SEAL the theme for 7th grade is "Self-Awarenss". Students explore this theme through a variety of units.

Stress - Awareness, Identifying Triggers, Signs of Stress, Internal and External Coping Skills

As a class, we define stress, identified different stressors, and learned effective ways to minimize and cope with stress. We also discussed how stress can be related to "good" events or "bad" events, and that they can be internal or external.

Identity and Character

We discussed what exactly is identity, what helps us develop our identity, and what factors influence our identity. We also discussed how your character impacts your identity, and why it is important to understand how your identity affects your inner and outer experiences.

Leadership and Teamwork

We shared what qualities make a good leader and what qualities make a good teammate. During our discussion, we brainstormed what leadership looks like in our lives, such as in school, on sports teams, in groups & activities, and with friends and family. We also concluded that everyone has the ability to be a leader at some point in their lives.

GRADE 8

In SEAL the theme for 8th grade is "Finding Your Own Path". Students explore this theme through a variety of units.

Career Exploration

During this unit students have the chance to take a career inventory and then explore careers of their choice. The students investigate their strengths, skills, job skills needed, job responsibilities, and academic courses and extracurricular activities that can be used to explore their particular areas of interest.

Success

Students brainstorm why success is important in their lives, their personal definition of success, how they measure success, and what skills are important for life-long success.

Goal Setting

As a class, students discuss the reason behind having goals and the importance of setting goals. Students learn how to conceptualize and develop SMART goals and have the opportunity to write their own goals: an academic/school goal and another goal of their choice.

High School Exploration

Students begin to explore the opportunities available to them in high school. They have the chance to look at different areas of study, academic planning tools, time management tools, sports, clubs, and other extracurricular opportunities available at the high school level.

National Career Development Month

November is National Career Development Month. Career exploration begins in early childhood. Career exploration is the process of increasing self-awareness and sense of identity including exploring interests, strengths, skills, and developing a strategy for future success and goals. Encouraging curiosity about future careers can help students want to take advantage of different opportunities, feel more self-confident, and motivate them to reach their goals.
