Dear Families,
We are thrilled to have your child as part of our 2nd grade family! We have very much enjoyed getting to know one another and becoming familiar with our daily routines and expectations. It has been a productive first few weeks in the classroom and we are looking forward to learning and growing together this school year!
ACTION ITEMS:
- Please send a reusable water bottle in with your child to keep at their desk to refill throughout the day as needed.
- Please send a sweater, sweatshirt, or light jacket in with your child to keep at their desks. Our classrooms get a little chilly at times and it is nice to have something to put on.
With Excited Hearts,
2nd Grade Team
2nd Graders ARE the pieces in a puzzle...TOGETHER, we make a beautiful picture!
Reading & Writing
This month, students will strengthen their skills to become better readers, writers, and spellers. Below are the skills that they will be working throughout the language arts block.
Foundational Skills
Blending words
Learning new high-frequency words
Building oral language skills
Applying sound/spelling correspondences to spell dictated words
Reading and Responding
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how, to demonstrate understanding of key ideas in a text.
Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
Writing
- Identify the steps of the writing process.
- Identify facts and opinions.
- Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words (e.g. cage --> badge; boy --> boil).
Math
Students will...
- use different models to solve real world addition and subtraction story problems using all subtypes involving one-step problems within 100.
- addition and subtraction counting strategies (using ten, using doubles and near doubles) working towards fluency.
- various models to show, reason, and explain applied strategies based on place value and the properties of operations when adding and subtracting within 100.
Students will work to fluently add and subtract within 20, using mental math strategies.
counting on
making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14)
decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9)
using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing if 8 + 4 = 12, then 12 - 8 = 4)
doubling (e.g., doubling 8 = 16; 8 + 8 = 16
halving (e.g., halving 18 = 9; 18 - 9 = 9)
creating equivalent but easy or known sums (e.g., using the known double when adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13)
Math Strategy Examples
Science
Matter & Its Interactions
Students will...
* Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.
* Make observations to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object.
Social Studies
History: Life in the Past
Students will analyze historical events by...
* analyzing events from the past using evidence that includes the perspectives of the people involved in the event.
* creating timelines of key events from earlier time periods.
* recognizing the contributions of individuals and groups past and present.
Students will explain how life and objects today are similar and different than in the past by...
*examining photographs, images and text descriptions from the past.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Students will discuss and learn how to give and receive compliments. Each day, one student from the class will be picked to be the "Paths Kid of the Day." The class and classroom teacher will give the Paths Kid compliments that will be sent home with the selected child.
Students will learn and practice strategies to deal with big emotions, like anger, and how to make good decisions at home and in school. They will learn and practice strategies to listen to one another and to play fair. Students will learn about manners and self-control.
