This week we are shining the student spotlight on Leo, one of our 5th graders! Leo is a curious, funny, and independent 10-year-old with so many talents and hobbies. A passionate artist and mathematician, he hopes to become an architect one day.

Outside of the classroom, Leo stays active playing piano, practicing taekwondo, rock climbing, and hiking—even conquering Colorado’s Pikes Peak for the second time last summer! At home, he loves taking care of his mini labradoodle, Rexi (including the daily challenge of brushing her teeth).

Leo’s favorite hobby, though, is origami—in the photo, he’s holding the tail section of an incredible T-Rex folded from 21 pieces of paper! He’s also currently studying Japanese at the Tenri Cultural Institute and plotting a future trip to Tokyo.

We are so lucky to have Leo as part of our PS3 community!

A Note From Hillary, Susannah, & Rebecca A Note From Hillary, Susannah, & Rebecca

Dear PS3 Families,

As we head into November, we want to thank you for your continued partnership and support. This past week was filled with joyful learning experiences, family engagement opportunities, and special traditions that remind us what makes our PS 3 community so extraordinary.

A special thank you to all of the families who joined us for our Family Mornings this month. These opportunities to learn alongside your children help strengthen the home-school partnership that is so important to student success. We are grateful for your engagement and look forward to welcoming many more families into our classrooms throughout November.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the families who joined us for our annual Halloween Parade. One of PS 3's most cherished traditions, the parade brought our school community together in a joyful celebration of creativity, connection, and school spirit. Seeing students proudly parade through the neighborhood while families lined the streets cheering them on was a wonderful reminder of the strong sense of community that makes PS 3 so special. Thank you for helping make this beloved tradition such a memorable experience for our children.

🍂 Parent-Teacher Conferences & Remote Learning Day

A reminder that Tuesday, November 3rd will be a remote instructional half-day, with instruction ending at 11:30 AM.

Following remote instruction, teachers will hold Parent-Teacher Conferences throughout the afternoon and evening. If you have not yet signed up for a conference, please connect with your child's teacher.

Your child's classroom teacher will provide specific information regarding remote learning expectations and schedules. We encourage families to test access to Google Classroom in advance to ensure a smooth start to the day.

Thursday, November 5th will be a full-day of in person school.

🎖️ Veterans Day

There will be no school on Wednesday, November 11th in observance of Veterans Day.

We extend our gratitude to all veterans and military families for their service and sacrifice.

🏫 Kindergarten Tours Begin

We are excited to welcome prospective families to PS 3 for our first Kindergarten Tour on Wednesday, November 4th at 9:00 AM. If you know families who may be interested in joining our school community, please encourage them to sign up through our website.

🌟 Deputy Superintendent Visit

On Thursday, November 5th, we will welcome Deputy Superintendent Kelly Shannon to PS 3. During her visit, she will spend time in classrooms and learn more about the outstanding teaching, learning, and community that make PS 3 such a special place. She will also speak to a parent panel and to a group of PS3 students.

We are excited for the opportunity to showcase the incredible work of our students and staff.

📚 Family Engagement Opportunities

We have many exciting opportunities for families to connect with our school community throughout November:

  • November 12: 5th Grade Family Morning

  • November 12: Emergent Readers Parent Workshop

✨ Black History Month Planning Committee

As we begin planning for Black History Month, we would love to partner with families to create meaningful celebrations and learning experiences for our students.

We are looking for family members who would like to join a Black History Month Planning Committee to help brainstorm events, share ideas, connect us with community resources, and support school-wide celebrations.

The most meaningful celebrations are those created together. We hope you'll join us in helping shape a Black History Month experience that celebrates excellence, fosters learning, and reflects the strength and diversity of our PS 3 community.

Whether you are reading together at home, attending school events, supporting remote learning, volunteering, or simply encouraging your child to try their best, you are an essential part of our school community.

Together, we continue to create a school where every child feels welcomed, challenged, supported, and inspired.

Our 5th graders are excited to lead this year’s Daily News Food Drive benefiting City Harvest! From October 27 through November 26, we invite every PS3 community member to help make a difference for New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity.

Our goal is for each class to fill at least one collection box with donations. With millions of New Yorkers, including one in four children, facing food insecurity, your contribution will help keep local food pantries and community programs stocked with nutritious food throughout the five boroughs.

Most-Needed Items

Please consider donating any of the following:

  • Canned fruit
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned proteins (such as tuna or beans)
  • Canned soups
  • Peanut butter (plastic jars only)
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese
  • Family-sized hot or cold cereal
  • Juice boxes or juice packs

Thank you for helping our students put compassion and community service into action. Every donation, big or small, makes a meaningful difference.

Born in Sweden, Magnus moved to New York City when he was 15 years old. Since joining the PS 3 community as a teacher in 2002, he has made a lasting impact on our school through his dedication to students, public education, and community traditions.

Today, Magnus teaches 4th grade, where he enjoys helping students grow as thinkers, problem-solvers, and community members. Earlier in his career at PS 3, he spent many years teaching mixed Grade 2 and Grade 3 classes. One of his favorite projects was guiding students in the creation of a longhouse, a memorable culminating experience that brought history, collaboration, and creativity to life.

Many members of the PS 3 community know Magnus as the leader of our annual Halloween Parade, playing the samba drum alongside a team of student musicians. While the parade tradition was created and led for many years by beloved teacher Themi, Magnus saw an opportunity to add something special. He thought to himself, "There should be a band!" That idea became a beloved part of the celebration, and over time Magnus took on leadership of the parade, carrying the tradition forward with music, joy, and school spirit each Halloween.

Magnus feels fortunate to serve the West Village community through a strong, vibrant public school. He has dedicated his life to the belief that public education creates equitable access to opportunity and helps strengthen our democracy. We are grateful for Magnus's passion, leadership, and commitment to PS 3, and for the energy, music, and sense of community he brings to our school every day. 🎶🥁🍂

3Fund: Our Annual Direct-Giving Campaign! 💙💚

With so many exciting fundraisers happening at PS3, here's a reminder that 3Fund is our annual direct-giving campaign, supporting the teachers, programs, and resources that benefit our students every day.
The PTA spends approximately $1,000 per student each year on these extras, so we're asking families who are able to give or raise $1,000 per child toward our $300,000 3Fund goal. Every contribution, at any amount, makes a difference!

Donate here: https://givebutter.com/ps3fund2627

Help us make your donations go further! We're building a matching-gift challenge for Giving Tuesday and would love to hear from families or businesses interested in contributing to the match. Please reach out to fundraising@ps3nyc.org.

Separately, your employer may match your donation to PS3! Check whether your company participates through our employer matching search tool: Give Amply
