Beat the Summer Slide!
Ways to exercise your brain muscle this summer
I hope you have all enjoyed the start to your summer. The weather certainly has made it easy to spend time by the many lakes in Washington and get outside! Hopefully the kids aren't saying, "We're bored!" quite yet, but just in case they are, here are some ideas to get them thinking and exercising their brain until school starts!
Tips To Avoid The "Summer Slide"
Stay Active!
Math Activities for the Summer
- Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts. Have your student make their own flashcards or click the button below to print some!
- You can also have them draw pictures to represent the facts using chalk outside. For example, 3 x 5 = 15 can be shown by drawing 3 groups of 5 ladybugs.
- Practice fractions by cooking with your student or building something.
- Play games such as Monopoly, Yahtzee, or card games that require mental math (Phase 10, Uno, etc.)
- iReady Learning Path - If you have a device at home, students just have to sign in to Chrome using their Google login and they will have access to all the learning resources they have access to during school.
- Play a license plate game - Trying to keep your children’s math minds sharp while on the road? Make a game out of license plates! For young children, the game can simply involve adding up the numbers. Who can be the first person to find a “10?” For children who are ready, can you use the numbers on the license plate and the four basic operations to get 24? (For example, if a license plate has 9, 1, 2, and 5, then you can make 24 by organizing the numbers as (9 – 1) × (5 – 2).)
