Confidence is the feeling of security and capability in oneself and one's abilities. It is the belief that one has the ability to meet life's challenges and succeed.
Former NBA great Kobe Bryant ... a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Lakers, 18-time All-Star, and 4th on the NBA's all-time scoring list ... knew a thing or two about having confidence and it came from his MAMBA MENTALITY. MAMBA MENTALITY is something that not only drove him to greatness on the court, but can also be seen outside the world of sports.
Kobe's "MAMBA MENTALITY" came down to this:
Be the best version of yourself ... it's a constant quest to try to be better today than you were yesterday. It's all about focusing on the process ... it's about 4 a.m. workouts, doing more than the next guy, and then trusting in the work you’ve put in when it’s time to perform. Hard work outweighs talent -- every time.
The Brickies know a little something about putting in hard WORK WORK WORK and as much as our student athletes have goals to WIN, the purpose focused on by our #23sports1team is very similar to the MAMBA MENTALITY. No matter where you are or what you're doing ... ALWAYS pursue being your VERY BEST and realize that the only way to accomplish that is to put in TIME and HARD WORK. These are the things that build Confidence! Throw in a POSITIVE ATTITUDE and COMPASSION FOR OTHERS and you've got yourself something special :).
Over the past week, whether it was purposeful or not, our fall sports were ALL exhibiting the MAMBA MENTALITY and it led to some memorable moments ...
I don't know about you, but right now I'm confident that it's time for BricksCenter!
Do you love BINGO?
Come out and play to support the Hobart Athletic Dept on October 26th!
Boys Tennis
After posting one of the best (... I say the BEST) regular seasons in recent memory with an overall record of 10-5, the Brickies served as host for the 2024 IHSAA Boys Tennis Sectional this past week.
Hobart drew a bye in the first round and played River Forest on Wednesday afternoon in the sectional semifinals. These two teams met waaaaaaay back on August 21st and the Bricks won a close one 3-2. The Ingots pulled off an upset in the opening round on Tuesday by defeating Andrean 4-1 and were looking to do it again Wednesday. After 1 set had been played at all 5 varsity positions, River Forest was ahead at 3 spots ... only junior Gabe Gutierrez (#2 singles) and the team of sophomore Angel Gomez & freshman Maverick Becerra (#2 doubles) won the first set of their respective matches for the Brickies. In set #2, Gutierrez and Gomez/Becerra closed out their opponents to give Hobart a 2-0 lead and bring our boys within 1 win of advancing to the championship round. Still, the Bricks had some work work work to do ... and that's EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID!! Senior Levi Snyder (#1 singles), junior Cash Salunga (#3 singles) and the team of sophomores Cash Ellenberger & Mason Mitchell (#1 doubles) ALL WON their 2nd sets to tie their matches up 1-1 and send them to a 3rd set tiebreaker!! The Bricks just needed to win one of the 3 to advance ... and play was INTENSE!! River Forest was able to hold off Ellenberger & Mitchell to win @ #1 doubles in a very close match. Both Snyder & Salunga fell behind early, but RALLIED and WON in COME-FROM-BEHIND FASHION to give Hobart a 4-1 VICTORY and earn a shot at winning their 6th title in school history!!
After a THRILLING semifinal victory over River Forest, the Brickies had to come back on Thursday and face the Merrillville Pirates for the 'ship! On 9/23, these same two squads met up in the regular season and Hobart came out victorious. Could the Bricks do it again and win their 6th sectional in school history?
YES!! YES!!! YES!!!
Hobart won the first set at ALL 5 VARSITY SPOTS, thoroughly controlled play on every court, and never looked back en route to a convincing 5-0 VICTORY!!
WEEEEEEEEEE ARE THE CHAMPIONS ... MY FRIE-EEEEEENNDDS! That's right, your Hobart Brickies are the 2024 IHSAA BOYS TENNIS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS!! Snyder, Gutierrez & Salunga took care of business in singles play and the dynamic duos of Ellenberger & Mitchell and Gomez & Becerra got it done in the doubles department ... ALL IN STRAIGHT SETS ... to help our boys bring home the title for the first time since 2022! I know, it's only 2 years :)
CONGRATULATIONS to Coaches Cade Brumley & Bill Granzow and to ALL of our boys on a FANTASTIC week of tennis!
The Brickies are now 12-5 overall and headed to LaPorte High School on Tuesday for the IHSAA REGIONAL where they will square off with Valparaiso. GO GET 'EM GUYS!!

2024 IHSAA BOYS TENNIS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS!!
Football
On Friday night at Don Howell Field, Class 4A #13-ranked Hanover Central came to town to square off with the Class 4A #16-ranked Hobart Brickies in a CLASH OF NCC TITANS!! Both squads entered the game with identical 4-0 conference records ...and the winner of this one would control their own destiny towards winning a conference title.
In a physical first quarter of play, neither team was able to put points on the board and the clock struck zero with Hanover driving deep into Brickie territory. Early in the 2nd period, the Wildcats crossed the goal line and took a 7-0 lead. After a Hobart punt, the Wildcats scored again on a long pass play to increase their advantage to 14-0. With their proverbial backs against the wall trailing by two touchdowns, the Bricks CAME OUT SWINGING! First, it was a LONG run by senior Willy Shearer to get Hobart into Wildcat territory! Then, sophomore QB Aleks Tatum hit senior wideout Aidan Leonard for a 19-yard TOUCHDOWN ...and when senior Zander Lankford booted the extra point through the uprights, it was 14-7!
To open the 3rd stanza, the two teams traded punts, which gave the ball back to the Brickies. It took Hobart about 3 minutes to get in the redzone and Shearer took care of the rest with a 4-yd TOUCHDOWN run!! With 12 minutes left, it was ALL TIED UP!!
Early in the 4th quarter, Hanover was threatening, but sophomore Bryce Tolliver hauled in an interception near the goal line to stop the threat and give the Brickies the ball back!! Hobart was unable to capitalize on the turnover and the Wildcats got the ball back in Brickie territory. On 4th down from the 26 yard line, Hanover running back Caiden Varrett rumbled 26 yards around the right side for a touchdown to put the Wildcats back in front 21-14. At the 3-minute mark, the Brickies had one more chance. Hobart drove the ball down the field in an attempt to get the game tied up, but a turnover in the closing seconds sealed the win for Hanover.
Final score: Hanover Central 21, Hobart 14
It was a GREAT high school football game and even though our boys came up one score short of a victory, the EFFORT and GRIT they showed was admirable ... our kids always BELIEVE - something that could come in handy if we see the Wildcats again in the sectional.
Tatum finished 13/21 for 146 yards passing and rushed for another 75 yards
Shearer carried the pill 27 times for 130 yards and a score
Sophomore Aiden Kasch hauled in 5 catches for 79 yards
Junior Josh Diaz and senior Jaelen Williams led the D-D-D-DEFENSE with 8 tackles each.
The Brickies are 4-3 overall and 4-1 in NCC play. Hobart will be on the road @ Hammond Morton on Friday and then wrap up the regular season @ Highland the following week. FINSH STRONG BOYS!! WE ARE HOBART!!

THANK YOU Brian Juris for these GREAT PICS!!
Volleyball
On Tuesday, the Brickies celebrated SENIOR NIGHT and played host to the Griffith Panthers in a non-conference matchup. Prior to the varsity contest, seniors Kilee Hite and Brooke Cawthon were recognized along with their families for their commitment, hard work & dedication devoted to the Hobart volleyball program during the course of their careers. Once play began, OUR GIRLS WERE ON FIRE (Thank you Alicia Keys)! The Bricks CRUISED to win the first set 25-8! During one stretch, Cawthon served about 14 consecutive points - WOW! Fortunes did not change for the Panthers in the 2nd set as Hobart again DOMINATED play and won convincingly 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead! In the 3rd & potential game-winning set, Griffith rallied and took an early 10-6 lead, but a quick timeout by Coach Madi Price got our girls refocused and it was ALL BRICKIES after that! Hobart scored 13 of the next 17 points to take a 19-14 advantage and never looked back on their way to a 25-15 win and a 3-0 VICTORY!!! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!! Cawthon KILLED it with a game-high 13 kills at the net ... junior Maddie Lams led the D-D-D-DEFENSE with 10 digs and Hite was dropping dimes with a game-high 13 assists!! The Bricks collectively had 11 serving aces as well! WOW!
Thursday night brought a trip to Highland to face the Trojans. Back on September 10th, Hobart hosted the Trojans and in a VERY competitive matchup, Highland was able to escape with a 3-1 win. This time around, the serve & volley action was INTENSE once again! Unfortunately, the final score matched the result from a month ago with Hobart suffering another close defeat 3-1.
Hobart is currently 10-16 on the year. The Brickies will close out the regular season this upcoming week with contests against Hammond Central, Hanover Central and Kankakee Valley. Monday is our final home game and will be DIG PINK night! Come on out, wear PINK and support a GREAT CAUSE! LET'S GO GIRLS!! WE BELIEVE IN YOU!!!

Cross Country
On a B-E-A-UTIFUL Saturday morning on the campus of Kankakee Valley High School, the Brickie harriers competed in the Northwest Crossroads Conference Championship Meet!
Girls
It was "ladies first" on Saturday as the starting gun fired at 9am! Running without their top two (Cassie Cohen & Aalliah Otero), our girls ran their hearts out against one of the best (...I say the BEST) groups of runners at the NCC Championship in recent memory! The girls race was LOADED with outstanding runners from top to bottom with Highland winning their 2nd straight title by just 3 points over rival Munster. The overall winner was a freshman from KV who traversed the 5K terrain in just 18 minutes and 11 seconds - WHOA! Sophomore Amanda Guthrie was the top finisher for the Brickies ... crossing the finish line in 26th place. Juniors Audrey Turley (29th) and Millie Massey (35th) were next into the chute before sophomore Grace Meagher (43rd) & freshman Lilliana Lopez (46th) crossed the line to round out the varsity scorers for Hobart. In the team standings, the Bricks finished 7th overall.
Boys
On the boys side, the depth of excellence was just as strong with the overall winner being 2-time state qualifier Jalen Strietelmeier from Highland, who finished in 16:14. Our boys were FANTASTIC putting 3 runners in the top 15 (All-NCC Honors) and placing all 5 varsity spots in the top 30! WOW! The Dynamic Senior Duo of Felix Lopez (7th) & Kolin Gladney (8th) earned FIRST TEAM ALL NCC for placing in the top 10 overall and junior Lu Cohen (15th) earned SECOND TEAM ALL NCC! Sophomore Nolan Shaginaw (28th) & senior Nick Meagher (30th) completed the Brickie lineup to help our boys finish 4th in the team standings. Only 14 points separated the 2nd place team from the 4th ... this was a CLOSE race!
The IHSAA Sectional will be run at Sunset Hill Farm County Park on Saturday, October 19th, which means our kids have two weeks to finalize preparation for their post-season run!

THANK YOU Mackie Stankich & Becky Williams for sharing these FANTASTIC pictures!

Girls
On Tuesday, the wheels on the bus went 'round & 'round over to Highland for the final NCC contest of the year. The Brickies got off the bus READY TO ROLL and lit up the scoreboard for 3 GOOOOOOOOOAAALLLS in the first half of action!! Over the final 40 minutes of play, the Bricks added 3 more scores and returned home to The Friendly City with a 6-0 VICTORY!! Sophomore Kurah Krucina led the attack with a hat trick of 3 goals and 1 assist! Seniors Makenna Rotz & Natalie Hostetler also sent shots into the back of the net and sophomore Addy Hendricks scored a goal to go along with a hat trick of assists!! Freshman Rylee Christman also registered an assist and senior Laila Perschau was PHENOMENAL in protecting the net as she finished with 7 saves to preserve the shutout win!!
Thursday night was the last home game under the lights for our senior girls as the Brickies hosted Merrillville. Hobart was clicking on ALL CYLINDERS right from the initial kickoff and rolled to an easy 9-0 VICTORY!! Krucina and senior Piper Ellenberger each had a hat trick of 3 GOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLS!! Seniors Annabelle Mauries & Addy Williams ... along with sophomore Emma Bullington ... also scored GOOOOOAAALS in the non-conference win!
Saturday afternoon, the Brickies wrapped up the regular season with a home contest against Victory Christian Academy out of Valparaiso. It was HOT out there... particularly for a Saturday in OCTOBER ... but it didn't change anything as our girls did what they needed to do and finished with a 2-0 VICTORY!!! Ellenberger and Hendricks each scored GOOOOOOAAALLS for Hobart as the Brickies controlled play for most of the game to bring home a W in the regular season finale!
Our girls are 13-2-1 overall on the year ... WOW!! IHSAA SECTIONAL play begins on Thursday over at Portage High School when the Bricks play the host Indians. Kickoff is scheduled for 5pm. GOOD LUCK LADIES!! WE BELIEVE!!!!
Boys
Wednesday night, the Brickies welcomed the Highland Trojans to Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard for a Northwest Crossroads Conference matchup. After falling behind early when the visitors scored a goal, Hobart BATTLED BACK to take a 3-1 lead heading into the halftime locker room! Over the course of the 2nd half, Highland tried desperately to close the gap, but our boys STOOD TALL and earned a well-played 4-2 VICTORY!! Junior Gabe Rodriguez scored two GOOOOOOOOAAAALLLS and sophomores Spencer Provins & Lincoln Miller each added one GOOOOOOOOAAAL in the NCC win!!
On Saturday morning, Hobart hosted Merrillville in the regular season finale. In what is always a physical game, both teams displayed some stellar D-D-D-DEFENSE while at the same time experiencing some narrow misses when opportunity presented itself for a goal. Ultimately, this one ended in a 0-0 tie.
Hobart finished the regular season with a record of 6-6-3 overall. IHSAA SECTIONAL play for the boys begins Tuesday over at Crown Point when the Bricks face the KV Kougars, Game time is 5pm....... GO GET 'EM GUYS!!
