FREE PD Opportunity: Collisions Between State and Federal Authority in the American Federal System

Date: October 9, 2026 | Location: Sherwood High School

This seminar will analyze disputes about the extent of federal and state authority throughout American History, beginning with the Federalists and anti-Federalists ratification debates, concluding with an exploration of leading episodes of state officials challenges to federal authority in the early American Republic, and analyzing various conflicts regarding the balance of state and federal power in the contemporary era. This program will be conducted as a discussion, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants, therefore, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. Teachers will receive a Letter of Attendance at the conclusion of the seminar. My Part of the Story: Exploring Identity in the United States

My Part of the Story is a collection of six lessons designed to launch a course about United States history, literature, or civic life through an examination of students’ individual identities. The materials in this unit support and challenge students in their efforts to define their own identity and their relationship to society as a whole. This approach empowers students to develop their own voices in both the classroom and the world at large, and it engages students in a study of the United States by showing them that their voices are integral to the story of the country.
