Fourth Grade Update
Room 137 is buzzing with learning...
Mathematics
This week we started our study of multiplication. We used quick images and arrays to help us start seeing things in groups. We also learned a variety of games to practice our memorization of basic facts. Quick recall of basic facts has a major impact on math achievement. Please be sure to practice at home!
Social Studies
Who is in charge? Who makes decisions? These have been questions we have explored this week in order to better understand the need and purpose of government. We are reading a variety of picture books and a chapter book titled, Among the Hidden. These texts have provided us a glimpse into places that do not have democratic government. Next week we will use their questions and thoughts to explore how democracy works. We will learn how decision makers are elected, how power is balanced between branches of government, and about the constitution. After we understand these ideas, we will be creating our own state. More about this coming soon...
The Jefferson City field trip was a great experience. Thank you to all the parent volunteers that helped make the trip run very smoothly. We spent Thursday touring the Capitol Building and Governor's Mansion. We enjoyed lunch in the Governor's Garden and took time to enjoy the fountains and statues on the property.
Reading
This week we worked on completing the fluency portion of the District Reading Assessment. Next week we will finish this assessment by completing the comprehension portion. Then we will be able to start reading groups and book clubs.
