Carolina TESOL October 2025
Dear Carolina TESOL Members,
As we enter a new season of learning and collaboration, we would like to express our gratitude to you—our dedicated members—for your ongoing commitment to serving multilingual students and families across the Carolinas. Your work makes a difference every day, and together we continue to strengthen our community of educators and advocates.
We’re excited to share that plans are underway for our Annual Conference, coming up November 5–7, 2025, in Charlotte, NC! This year’s theme, “Our Voices, Our Stories,” celebrates the diversity, resilience, and shared experiences that shape our profession. We can’t wait to come together to learn, connect, and celebrate the incredible stories within our community.
In addition, our Carolina TESOL Impact series is returning this fall and winter! These member-led professional development sessions are designed to highlight the expertise already thriving in our classrooms and communities. Ultimately, we remain committed to our advocacy for multilingual learners and ensuring equitable access to education. Please take a moment to renew your membership or invite a colleague to join; our collective strength depends on your participation. Thank you for all that you do—and for being the heart of Carolina TESOL.

2025 Carolina TESOL Annual Conference
One Month to Go!
We are less than one month away from our 2025 annual conference, taking place November 5-7, 2025! This year's theme, "Our Voices, Our Stories," speaks to the diversity of who we are in our lived and shared experiences.
- As colleagues, we have stories of what works well in the classroom and beyond for language acquisition.
- As advocates, we have stories of change and how we can advance our profession forward to better meet the needs of those we strive to serve.
- As a people, we have stories of grit, resilience, and hope that illuminate our paths into our futures.
Together, our resonance transcends inequities, and our counter narrative speaks truth! Come and let us communicate, collaborate, and celebrate Our Voices, Our Stories together.

Hands-On Approach to AI Tools that Make an ML Teacher's Life Easier
Carolina TESOL member, Mr. Cesar Orozco, is a teacher from Soledad, Atlantico, Colombia who has been working in teaching languages for more than 15 years in his homeland and here in the US. He started his career in the US as a Spanish teacher in Warren County Schools, later moving to Granville County Schools to teach Spanish at the middle school level. After 2 years, he moved to the ESL program, where he has been serving to date. He has always been curious about the use of technology in education, which has led him to participate in various projects aimed at implementing it in the classroom. This led to his selection as part of the AI task force at Granville County Schools, where he has led workshops to educate teachers on the practical application benefits and pros of AI in the classroom.
Join us in November for snacks, a discussion panel, music, and networking! Contact Yeison Herrera at centralnc@carolinatesol.com for more information!
Thank you to all who joined the NC Piedmont mini conference this past September! Participants gained hands-on experience in makerspace labs, attended a workshop on AI, and explored iPad apps. There were 12 presentations on Saturday, which included some pre-service teachers from across the state. We look forward to our next event!
Throughout the summer, Carolina TESOL members in South Carolina engaged in a book study of Ron Daise’s Raptors in the Ricelands. In three virtual sessions, members discussed multilingual supports (e.g., culturally responsive teaching and cultural identity) as they traced the Gullah Geechee history woven through the narrative. During our final session, participants had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Ron virtually and ask questions about his experience and journey in understanding his Gullah Geechee roots. We are excited to have Mr. Ron in person at our annual conference in Charlotte!
We had a blast at the second annual Low Country Books & Beach gathering on September 6 from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Participants networked, had a focused conversation on serving SLIFE students, and took a deep dive into Dr. Salva’s Supporting SLIFE and Newcomers: From Grade Level Learning to Accelerated Learning and Literacy.
