Lighthouse families,

We had a fun Homecoming Week last week! Our Lighthouse Panther Sweepstakes winner was Mahdi Sabur. Mahdi will get to choose how to spend the $500 for our school from a list of ideas and projects generated by our staff. Thank you to everyone who joined in on the Homecoming fun and helped make the week so enjoyable!

Our students are also finding new ways to share their voice this year through the Lighthouse Weekly. This student-created newspaper highlights what is happening around Lighthouse from a student perspective. It has been fun to read their stories and see their personalities come through.

Mr. Mac is leading the Lighthouse Weekly process and helping students learn about journalistic integrity, writing for an audience, gathering information, and creating content that is respectful, appropriate, and meaningful. It’s a great example of students having a real audience and a real purpose for their work.

We’re looking forward to connecting with families and sharing more about your child’s learning, growth, and goals. Facilitators will have both in-person and WebEx options available. Please sign up to meet with your child’s advisor as well as any other facilitator your child works with. Sign-up links and additional information can be found on the Lighthouse School conference page on the website. Go to the Ligthouse School conference page to sign up for conferences.

In this week’s school newsletter, you’ll also find some background information about the Permanent School Fund ballot question that all Minnesota voters will see this fall. The proposed constitutional amendment would change how money from the Permanent School Fund is distributed to school districts. If approved, it would increase the funding distributed to public school districts, including our schools, without increasing individual income or property taxes. The change would take effect July 1, 2027. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read through the information and learn more about the question before you vote.

Please remember that next week is a short week. There is no school on Thursday, October 8 or Friday, October 9 as our staff engages in professional learning and preparation for conferences.

As always, we appreciate the partnership we have with our Lighthouse families. There are lots of exciting things happening, and we’re looking forward to sharing more with you throughout the year!

Make it a great week!

Statewide School Funding on the Ballot This Fall; No New Taxes

Minnesota voters will decide this fall whether to change how money from the state’s Permanent School Fund is distributed to public schools. If approved, the change would provide additional funding to public school districts, including Spring Lake Park Schools. It would not increase taxes.

The proposed amendment would change how the annual distribution from the fund is calculated. If the amendment passes, Spring Lake Park Schools is expected to receive about $33 more per student, or approximately $200,000. Leaving the question blank has the same effect as voting No. Learn more about the Permanent School Fund ballot question.
