Understanding What Motivates Our Students

Families, keep an eye on your child’s backpack! A Student Preference Survey is coming home this week. This short survey helps us learn what motivates and excites your child so we can make their school experience even more meaningful and engaging.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and return it by October 30.

Thank you for helping us support every student’s success at the Ottawa Area Center! 🌟

2025/2026 Yearbook Pre-orders

Yearbooks are no longer included in a Geskus picture package. We are now taking pre-orders for the yearbook for students and staff. Paper pre-order forms have been sent home with students. Staff can pre-order by completing the pre-order Google form. The deadline for all pre-orders is November 21.

🎃 Spook-tacular News! 👻

Get ready for some frightful fun! On October 31st, during our half day of school, the amazing OAC Special Teachers and Staff are brewing up something special — a Halloween Trunk or Treat & Party for all our students!

👗🦸‍♂️ Costumes encouraged!
Send your little ghosts, goblins, superheroes, and princesses to school in costume for a 1/2 day of treats and fun.

🍬 Want to help?
We’d love your support! Please consider sending in Halloween candy for our Trunk or Treat stations. Visitors are welcome if you have completed the necessary volunteer paperwork.

Just a reminder — we’re a peanut-free school, so kindly make sure all candy is nut-free.

Let’s make this Halloween a BOO-tiful one! 🎃🕸️

Ottawa Area Center Volunteers

All volunteers must complete the volunteer form and undergo a background check before helping in a classroom, joining any school outing, attending school events during the school day, or taking a field trip.

The background check can take 3–5 days to process, so please turn in your forms to the office or your child’s teacher well before the date you plan to volunteer.

This process must be completed every school year.

If you’d like volunteer forms sent home in your child’s backpack, please contact the office.

Lucas Project

The Lucas Project Meet & Mingle Program was created to bring respite care to special needs families while they enjoy a much needed break, run errands, or connect with other caregivers. We are excited to bring this opportunity to families within the West Michigan community, as it is a much needed resource for parents and caregivers. This program is offered for a low cost fee of $5 for disabled individuals between the ages of 13 – 50 years old.

OAC Social Work/OCSN Parent Resources

This is your one stop location for parents/guardians to go for community supports and resources. Please check out this resource at Social Work/OCSN Resource Warehouse. Bookmark this resource on your computer and refer back often. It will be continually updated with fresh and new information.

Absences for Medical Appointments

Any time your child is absent from school for a medical appointment, please send in a Dr. excuse note to the office or to your teacher. The office will code the absence as a medical appointment and then the absence does not count towards the overall absence total. We can only mark it as a medical appointment if we have documentation from the doctors office.

OAC Needs Substitutes!!!

OAC needs substitute aides and teachers. If you are interested in a flexible schedule where you work on the days you want, this is the job for you. If you have any questions please call Michell at 616-738-8960 ext. 4608.
