A TASTY LESSON AT ELIZABETH HIGH SCHOOL
Culinary Arts students at Elizabeth High School had a fun lesson and visit from Chef Steve who was teaching all about Pico de Gallo. Chef Steve is from Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts.
The students worked in groups and learned about how to do proper knife cuts. Each student had a chance to demonstrate their knife skills as they mastered their recipes.
Pico de Gallo is traditionally made from chopped tomato, onion and serrano peppers, with salt, lime juice and cilantro.
EHS Culinary Arts Teacher Tamara Williams says her students did an excellent job and learned a lot from Chef Steve.
EHS BUSINESS PROGRAM STUDENTS PUT IN HOT SEAT DURING MOCK INTERVIEWS
Getting the job!
This week EHS Business program students were in the hot seat, doing mock interviews for jobs in retail and hospitality. The students were not given any advanced notice of what the questions would be and had to speak about their experiences, work ethic, leadership qualities and all the things that are expected in job interviews.
ESD Superintendent Dan Snowberger, ESD Board Member & Secretary Mary Powell and ESD Board Clerk and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Jaimee Glazebrook played the roles of hiring manager.
In the end, after a long round of interviews, three students were selected from the group for the available positions.
This simulation gives the students a valuable experience and training that will definitely come in handy when it comes time for the real thing!
DEA AGENT GIVES PRESENTATION AND TALKS ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE OVERSEAS
The EHS Global Crime course was honored to have Agent David Olesky as a guest speaker.
Serving with the DEA since 2000, Agent Olesky has worked on investigations throughout the United States and in foreign postings in Colombia and Panama. His first-hand accounts and information on the mechanics of both drug trafficking and money laundering held the student’s attention and inspired many questions about his experiences. He also conveyed a strong message on the spread of the fentanyl crisis, using examples from Denver area drug seizures to drive the danger of street drugs home, supporting his “One Pill Can Kill” campaign.
Students expressed gratitude to Agent Olesky offering his time to give them a window into his world as they continue their study of crime around the world.

INDEPENDENT CLASSICAL ACADEMY COMING TO ESD IN THE FALL 2025
THERE IS A NEW CLASSICAL CHARTER SCHOOL COMING TO ELIZABETH THIS
FALL! Independence Classical Academy (ICA), a new elementary classical
charter school, is coming to Elizabeth August 2025.
What sets Independence Classical Academy (ICA) apart from the other schools in the area is that it offers a classical education, which is grounded in the belief that education should cultivate wisdom as well as virtue.
Grammar, logic, and rhetoric provide the foundational framework through which students acquire knowledge, develop critical thinking, and master oral and written communication skills. In addition to providing intellectual rigor, foundation stones (virtues) are taught that instill a sense of moral responsibility. Through the Core Knowledge Curriculum which includes history, literature, science and art, students are reconnected with the wisdom of the past, preparing them to engage meaningfully with the challenges of the present, envision a better future, and develop a capacity to know the good, the true, and the beautiful.
With regards to location, for the first year (2025-2026), the plan is to hold classes in the Frontier School building on Banner Street in the town of Elizabeth while the new building is being built. Then, for the second year (2026-2027), the plan is to move into the new school building which will be located near the corner of CR 158 and Delbert Road in the new Independence Neighborhood. For students living in-district, busing will be provided by the Elizabeth School District starting in the fall of 2025 and will continue after the move into the new building.
To find out more and enroll your child, please visit www.independenceclassical.org.
YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO GIVE YOUR INPUT ON THE PROST MASTER PLAN
The Greater Elizabeth area is in the process of developing a Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Trails (PROST) Master Plan which will set the groundwork for the long-term health, connectivity, and sustainability of the area and its communities.
Your voice is the most important piece of this process, so we invite you to participate in a 10-15 minute online survey by scanning the QR code or visiting the link below. Don’t miss your chance to get involved—the survey closes on February 28th, 2025. Hard copies are available at Elizabeth Town Hall.
NEW LAW IS IN EFFECT FOR CELL PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING
A Colorado law (C.R.S 42-4-239) recently changed, effective January 1, 2025, which prohibits all cell
phone use while driving.
This law prohibits holding or using a cell phone while driving on public roads. This includes texting,
calling, Snapchatting, or watching TikTok’s, even on speakerphone.
Exemptions: You may use a cell phone ONLY in emergencies (e.g., reporting car crashes or other
imminent safety hazards).
What could this cost? Fines start at $75 for the first offense and can go up to $250 for repeated offenses.
Serious injuries or deaths caused by using a cell phone while driving could result in more severe
consequences (such as arrest).
Will EPD be enforcing this new law? YES, especially in the school zones!!
Remember, keep your hands on the wheel, not the phone! Drive safe!
Sincerely,
Officer Steven Herbel
