Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy

After a slow start due to the storm, we are finally back in full swing! Students are learning routines and our building is full of wonderful learning opportunities! Our teachers are working hard to ensure that your students are getting a top notch education. We are implementing robust curriculums that focus on grade level standards. If you have not had an opportunity to connect with your child's teacher, I highly encourage it. We will open our building up for Back to School Night on September 14th. That is a great opportunity for you to learn more about our program and see what your student has been working on. For those of you who are new to Lambs Elementary, welcome!

Attendance matters! "Students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. This relationship between attendance and achievement may appear early in a child's school career." We are tracking this very closely and want to make sure that our students are at school. Please make every effort to have your students to school on time and not signing out early! Show up to Glow up! Let's have some fun with the attendance spirit week next week! Students may dress out of uniform to participate!

This year, nominated students in grades 3-5 will test in September in an attempt to allow all children who qualify as Gifted and Talented per SCDE guidelines to begin gifted service as early in the school year as possible. If you would like to nominate your child for this testing, please complete one of the forms below.

Special Area News

PE: Welcome Back!! My name is Coach Wilber and I have an update from PE class. This month in PE in grades K-3, we are working on learning what an exercise is and sharing those exercises with our classmates and then learning how to move safely in our own space. In grades 4th & 5th, we are working on setting expectations and being responsible for ourselves and working on developing teamwork. We have had a great first month of school. Please remember to wear the proper shoes so you can move safely on your PE day!!

Music: I am so excited to see all of the students and to start our music year!

One of our first class activities will be setting our guidelines, goals, and expectations in music.

Each class will start earning 15 points where they decide our music activities for the day.

September will focus on instruments age appropriate for each grade. We will learn pedagogy skills and rhythms to accompany songs and stories. Each grade level will learn about the Artistic Process: Performing which will include singing and building confidence as storytellers through our songs.

All of these activities are based on our state guidelines "South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency".

There will also be performance opportunities for each grade level this school year. I will send out more information in September. It's going to be an exciting and wonderful year in music!

Art-This month students are learning all about the procedures of the art room. They are becoming

familiar with their new surroundings as well as their new art teacher, and it has been a blast! In the coming weeks students will begin to create art in anticipation of International Dot Day, which occurs on September 15th every year. To do so, students will have The Dot by Peter H.

Reynolds read to them and each grade will make a work of art that relates to the book. For

example, second grade artists will make a gallery of dots for the hallway and first grade artists will make rainbow dots to be displayed in the art room. In true The Dot fashion, each student will “make a mark and see where it takes them!” Following their days full of dots, fifth grade artists will make their own sketchbooks to keep in the art room. These sketchbooks will house ideas for art they make this year, notes, and drawings made in their down time! I can’t wait to see what our artists create next!
