"My name is Psalms ‘Ilolahia, I’m Tongan, Kiwi, 20 years of age, and I attended

the mighty Avondale College. For the last few years I’ve worked in retail, but fashion wasn’t one of my strengths lol so I decided to work at A.C.E.S because I enjoy working with youth and I wanted to try something new."

Ordering me a coffee, because I don’t drink coffee lol

2019 Flashback Celebrating Community Impact - Freeland Reserve PBL Storyboard design

In 2019, a $1.5 million upgrade to Freeland Reserve in Mt Roskill, part of a $6.1 million redevelopment by Kāinga Ora and Auckland Council, featured significant contributions from Auckland City Education Services (ACES) Akonga. Kainga Ora, reached out to ACES to collaborate on Storyboards for the new reserve. The combined Akonga work on three cultural storyboards highlighted youth-led placemaking and community identity for the development.

Student-Designed themed Storyboards

Led initially by Andrew Graydon in 2019, the ACES Maungawhau group, created three storyboards as part of a Project-Based Learning collaboration with Kāinga Ora. The designs, inspired by Youthline’s *Ngā Uri O*, Mana Whenua model, and words from the late and much beloved ACES staff member Bryan Ngamata, were produced with Brave Design for permanent installation at Freeland Reserve.

The Three Thematic Foundations

Connecting Through Community

Honored local leaders like Bryan Ngamata, emphasizing kotahitanga and whanaungatanga.

Connecting Through History

Highlighted Te Auaunga Awa, local maunga, and the area’s role as a traditional navigational network, with input from Te Ākitai Waiohua and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

Connecting Through Identity

Featured the *Te Auaunga Tohu*, a symbol by Sunnah Thompson and Wikuki Kingi, reflecting mātauranga Māori and environmental restoration, designed by Numa MacKenzie.

Community Impact - Real world impact

Students presented their PBL design concepts to the Puketāpapa Local Board and Mana Whenua forum, receiving strong support for their culturally rich designs. Ongoing iwi consultation ensured historical and cultural accuracy.

Celebratory Events: A VIP opening ceremony in April 2022 honoured students and Kaiako and was supported by Karyl Puklowski (ACES Manager), Corey Todd (MAGS Deputy Principal) and Julie Spedding (Senior Advisor MOE), alongside MPs, council executives, and mana whenua. A special storyboard blessing occurred in late August of that year with community stakeholders.

These storyboards wove a lasting narrative of education, culture, and identity through Freeland Reserve, showcasing the power of youth in shaping their community’s future and more importantly providing an example of the power of Project Based Learning based in the community, while honouring the memory of Bryan Ngamata.

POSTSCRIPT: One of our Term 4 Project Groups will be helping to compile some of the amazing Project Based Learning Outcomes from ACES AE's past to present, as part of their PBL programme. Watch this space!

Bryan Ngamata - My Desire for Mount Roskill If anything my desire would be that, Mount Roskill would be the community it was, when I grew up, being that it was a community where everyone go to know each other, that took the time out to mingle and mix with one another. Kids used to go to one another’s houses and the Door used to always be open to each other to have lunch together, Have dinner with each other, that’s what I’d like to see But Knowing that communities grow there’s going to be something like 10,000 new homes in Mount Roskill, that means a Bigger population. I’m not sure if people would have the same sense to get out and meet one another. They might do. I hope they do because that’s one of the memories I have of Mount Roskill. I’d just like to see a strong sense of Community, not just Mount Roskill but everywhere, where communities get outside, Get to know one another. Do things with one another Like a real village, Like a real community Bryan Ngamata - Excerpt from Interview with ACES Students from the “Roskill Tales” project group. Bryan sadly passed away October 4, 2020 Talofa my name is Sauaso Aute-NeliI am 15 years of age and have been attending aces for 2 years. Our first storyboard is called connecting through community. The idea behind this board comes from the words of recently passed ACES staff member Bryan Ngamata. He was our first interview of a Resident from mt Roskill for our project called Roskill tales. During this interview he talked about what community means to him. So… how do we connect through community? By doing what we are doing today, which is connecting with Kaingaora which is Karla, Antonia and ministry of education with Julie and MAG with Corey and ACES staff for our Milestone Presentation
