Sullivan Boys’ Tennis Off to a Strong Start
The Sullivan boys’ tennis team opened their 2025 season with three competitive matches, showing determination, depth, and improvement across the lineup. Under the leadership of Coach Wes Kirk, the team has battled through early challenges and is gaining momentum heading into the rest of their schedule.
Season Opener vs. Gibson Southern
Sullivan began the season on August 16 at home against perennial powerhouse Gibson Southern. Despite falling 3–2, the Golden Arrows demonstrated grit in every match. Sam Couch earned a hard-fought singles victory, while the doubles team of Spencer Hanks and Jaxon Zollman secured a win in their first outing together. Although Sullivan came up just short in several close sets, Coach Kirk praised his team’s competitiveness and perseverance in hot conditions, noting the strong effort across all positions and the promise shown by his young roster.
First Victory Against Washington
Two days later, on August 18, Sullivan bounced back with a decisive 4–1 win over Washington. Carter Mischler and Sam Couch dominated their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Hanks/Zollman and Zane Abbott/Easton Monroe earned straight-set victories. At #1 singles, Hunter Pinkston battled through three intense sets before narrowly falling in a super-tiebreaker. Coach Kirk highlighted the team’s depth as the key to the win, adding that Hunter’s ability to compete at the top spot shows his potential to be a consistent contributor as the season progresses. Junior varsity also found success, sweeping Washington 3–0. Wins came from Tanner Boyll in singles play and doubles teams Carter Lee/Brody Cary and Cale Thomas/Crue Thomas.
Road Sweep at South Vermillion
Sullivan carried their momentum into an impressive 5–0 sweep of South Vermillion on the road on August 19. Pinkston, Mischler, and Couch each claimed singles victories, with Mischler and Couch winning convincingly in straight sets. In doubles action, both Hanks/Zollman and Abbott/Monroe shut out their opponents 6–0, 6–0. The junior varsity squad also dominated, winning 4–0 behind strong play from Boyll, Carter Lee, Brody Cary, and the Thomas brothers.
Coach Kirk expressed pride in the balanced performance:
“We played well in every position against South Vermillion. I am very happy to see both our varsity and junior varsity off to a good start for the season. We also wish South Vermillion’s new tennis coach, Ryan Scott, good luck in his first season coaching.”
SES PTO Presents: Penny Wars!
Get ready for some fun competition! Here’s how it works:
-
Pennies and bills = Positive Points
Drop these into your classroom’s jar to boost your total.
(Each penny = 1 point, $1 bill = 100 points, and so on.) -
Silver coins = Negative Points
Drop these into other classrooms’ jars to sabotage their total.
(Nickel = –5 points, Dime = –10 points, Quarter = –25 points.)
Strategy:
Fill your own jar with pennies and bills while using nickels, dimes, and quarters to bring down the totals of other classrooms.
