SMS Weekly Update
April 5, 2024
Student Life at SMS
Dear Archers,
SMS was energized this week with all of the staff and students back in the building after enjoying the sunshine last week; we hope everyone was able to do something that filled their bucket with joy.
FLEX reminders:
Emails have started going out to notify you of your student’s FLEX class. The notice will be sent by Tuesday, the night before a FLEX class, and will tell you whether your student was hard-requested (teacher assigned) or whether he/she/they chose the class to attend.
There are grade-level specific test make-up sessions that students can utilize.
Please encourage your student to sign up in the area(s) he/she/they need support in or would like to experience an extension for.
STATE TESTING reminders:
State testing is scheduled to begin later this month. The information on the test is important to our staff, district, and the state, so we encourage students to do their best. Sherwood has traditionally scored very high showcasing the academic rigor and success of students at the middle level, which is a standard we are committed to continuing. Student participation is imperative for staff asking for resources, programs, and support, so we appreciate your partnership in encouraging your student(s) to do their best.
Here are a few reminders about state testing for your student:
Students will need to turn in/off their cell phones, smartwatches, and earbuds (when not using them for the test) every session of their tests.
Students will need headphones compatible with their chromebook. Plug in style headphones are preferred, however bluetooth headphones / earbuds are also allowed this year at the teacher's discretion. The school has the plug-in type and students can borrow these or use their own.

Reminder: State Testing Notice
As a reminder, Oregon's Statewide Assessments in science, mathematics, and English language arts will begin later this month for students in grades 3-8.
Scheduled testing will take place during the school day. For additional information on the State Assessments from the Oregon Department of Education, please review the following link.
While no single test can give a complete picture of your child’s progress, statewide tests provide information to students and families, as well as to educators and administrators, about what educational approaches are working and where additional resources are needed. Your child’s participation is important to ensure schools and districts receive the targeted resources they need to help all students succeed. Districts are rated on their participation levels as well as student performance on this exam.
Oregon law (ORS 329.479) permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. If you decide to opt your child out of the math and/or ELA state assessments, please submit the following form to your school front office by Friday, April 12 to best support our school with planning for this year's testing schedule:
