PLEASE READ: A Note from Mrs. Pitts

Dear RES Families,

Although we know that June 12 is the last day for our K students, we would like to invite them BACK, if they are available, to attend our end of year assembly on June 18. They can be dropped off in the morning drop off line at 8:30, as to not confuse our bus drivers, and be picked up at 9:15 in the back of the school (regular pick up area). This is not mandatory but they have been absent from this assembly for the last couple of years and it never felt quite right! Please email me if you have questions.

THANK YOU for your support,

Warmly,

Michelle Pitts

NEXT WEEK, students in grades 3 and 4 will participate in the New Hampshire Statewide

Assessment System (NH SAS).

Assessment State assessments are an important part of the data we consider when supporting the needs of our students and reflecting on our own practice. If you have questions about testing, we always encourage families to reach out.

Students who have opted out will be provided an activity or assignment in the classroom that is aligned with the subject area being tested, which can be completed independently. Teachers will provide this information to families.

We are incredibly proud of our students and the information we gain is incredibly valuable so thank you for your support!

Tips for Testing:

  • Please make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast
  • Ensure students get a good night's sleep.
  • Healthy snacks are being provided as we try to make the week a little more enjoyable.

This is a time to show their perseverance and to shine; we only ask them to try their best. They’ve got this!

Dear SAU 50 Community,

The SAU 50 Joint School Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Ellen Kaschuluk has accepted the

position of Superintendent of SAU 50.

Dr. Kaschuluk currently serves as Assistant Superintendent in York, Maine, where she provides

leadership across curriculum, instruction, assessment, professional development, and teacher

certification. Her prior experience includes serving as a high school assistant principal, science

teacher, and technology integrator, giving her a well-rounded perspective on both classroom

instruction and school leadership.

The Board is confident that Dr. Kaschuluk’s experience and leadership will support the continued

success of SAU 50’s students, staff, and schools. “Dr. Kaschuluk brings a thoughtful, student-

centered approach and a strong record of instructional leadership,” said Matt Curtin, Chair of the

SAU 50 Joint School Board. “We are confident she will build on the district’s strengths and guide

SAU 50 into its next chapter with clarity and purpose.”

Dr. Kaschuluk will work closely with the Board and Dr. Zadravec to support a smooth and thoughtful

transition. The Board’s priority remains ensuring continuity, stability, and ongoing success across

the district during this period.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kaschuluk to the SAU 50 community.

Sincerely,

Matt Curtin

Chair, SAU 50 Joint School Board

Toys and Tools Toys and Tools

I wanted to send a reminder asking for your support around an increase in personal toys and fidget items coming from home. While we understand that children often enjoy bringing items from home to share with friends, we have recently seen a significant increase in the number of personal toys, sports gear, games and fidgets being brought into the classroom. Unfortunately, this has led to several ongoing challenges that have impacted our learning environment.

Why we ask for these items to stay at home:

Classroom Distractions: Even the smallest toys and fidgets can become a major distraction during lessons, taking focus away from learning for both the owner and their peers.

Loss and Damage: We know how much these items mean to your children. When a precious toy or fidget is lost, traded, or accidentally damaged, it causes genuine distress.

Equity: We are seeing an increase in students feeling big feelings if they do not have what another child has, especially as fidgets, squishies, etc are becoming more "rare."

We recognise that some children need or require fidget tools. To ensure consistency and fairness, the school maintains its own supply of these tools. These are used within specific, agreed parameters under the guidance of our teaching staff. By using school-provided equipment, we can ensure the tools remain a support for learning rather than a distraction.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us achieve this!

As you know, we document student attendance throughout the school year. At the start of the day, this information helps us to ensure that all students are where they are supposed to be and safe. Throughout the school year, this information can be extremely helpful for understanding a child’s experience at school and whether there are patterns or indicators of challenges or disruption. Ultimately, being at school with their peers and school community is critical to a child’s success academically and socially. With all of this in mind, Lori Arsenault and I will be reaching out to those families whose students have missed between 10-20 percent of school days this year.

We do not want this to feel punitive or judgemental in nature. We are hoping to extend support and open communication with you to see if there is anything we can do to help your child be here at school. We understand that illnesses, family circumstances, and the occasional need for a day off are a reality in all of our lives; however, we are always concerned about the social, emotional and academic impacts that can arise with a high number of absences.

Thank you for your understanding,

Michelle Pitts and Lori Arsenault

Wild Symphony

Students in grades 1-4 attended the Wild Symphony performance at The Portsmouth Music Hall last week. This book, by local author Dan Brown, was read to students and, after each page, they enjoyed music played by a full symphony orchestra specifically to highlight each page of the text.

Fun in the BRIGHT sun!

Students in grade 4 got outside to eat this week and truly enjoyed the sunshine! Getting more sunshine and Vitamin D is always a goal of ours at RES and we love when students can have lunch together in the outdoors.

A Chef Visits Preschool!

Ethan Curtin, a chef, taught our preschool and pre-Kindergarten students how to make biscuits and shared his journey, which started by working in local restaurants. He shared photos of his food art with our students and impressed all of the teachers with his skills! The children all had their own decorated aprons and all of this was supported by REF!

LUNCH IN THE CAF LUNCH IN THE CAF

User uploaded image

You are welcome to join us in the cafeteria during your child's lunch block! There is no pressure to attend but the door is open to you if you find this works with your schedule. Due to cafeteria space and tables, we invite one family member at a time to have lunch with their child(ren). Lunch is a wonderful time for kids to practice their social skills and build relationships with their peers. We actively monitor these times and encourage student growth and independence while also keeping a focus on fueling their bodies with food! This occasional experience offers you a special time to join your child in their social world at RES.
  • Email resoffice@sau50.org if you would like to attend with the date/time. It is important to anticipate who will be in the building. We love these opportunities for students and their family members but we will always put safety first.
  • Adults must bring their own lunch and can bring lunch for their own child.
  • We do have a focus during this time...eating for energy and brain power!
  • Family members must meet the child in the cafeteria and leave from the cafeteria BEFORE we line up all the children.
  • Days for family visits are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Lunch times are:
  • Kindergarten-11:45-12:10

    First Grade-12:15-12:40

    Second Grade-12:15-12:40

    Third Grade- 11:15-11:40

    Fourth Grade-11:15-11:40
