Westmoor Weekly 12/05/2025
December 5, 2025
A Note from Principal Eck
Dear Westmoor Families,
It has been a joyful week of learning at Westmoor! Our teachers introduced the remaining components of our new reading curriculum, HMH Into Reading, building on the foundational skills (K-3) and word study (4-5) portions we launched at the start of the year. Students have been engaged, curious, and excited as they dive into the new materials.
We also enjoyed a little winter fun—our students had an absolute blast playing in the snow, and I’ve included a picture that captures their joy perfectly.
And of course, we wrapped up the week with our Winter Sing. Year after year, this event continues to shine, and today’s performance was truly outstanding! The art show was equally impressive, showcasing incredible creativity and talent. Our packs added a delightful touch with their adorable penguins, bringing extra winter magic to the school. If you weren’t able to join us in person, the performance will be available on the Westmoor YouTube channel in the coming days.
We’re grateful for a week filled with learning, joy, and community, and we look forward to even more great moments ahead.

Westmoor Warehouse
The Westmoor Warehouse, our schoolwide, universal, Tier 1 SEL system, is well underway and going great! It is always our goal to incentivize and recognize the amazing efforts around Westmoor, while focusing explicitly on life skills. Westmoor Warehouse classroom rewards have been updated for the second trimester! Check out the new updates in the attached flyer.
PAWS for Character Awards - November was Gratitude
Each month, our staff members nominate students who consistently demonstrate the featured character trait of the month. These students are celebrated with a certificate and a special photo alongside our very own Buddy the Bulldog! In addition, they are recognized during our end-of-trimester assemblies as we honor their positive contributions to our school community.
Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) for 3rd & 5th
Students in 3rd and 5th grades will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) during the week of December 8. The assessment includes three sections: verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative. No special preparation is needed. As always, we simply encourage families to ensure students get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. Click here to learn more about the test.
Information About Head Lice
Northbrook School District 28 follows guidance from the IDPH and CDC in handling lice. While lice can be a nuisance, they are not a health hazard and do not spread disease. We encourage families to check their children regularly and any time there is a concern. Please also remind children not to share personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, or clothing.
Per IDPH guidelines, and to protect student confidentiality, the district does not conduct preventative lice screenings or send classroom notifications when a case occurs. At this time, Westmoor is not experiencing a lice outbreak.
If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider or Nurse Woodward at awoodward@northbrook28.net.

District 28 Weather/Outdoor Policy
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. The District 28 weather policy is: Students go outside for recess every day as long as the "feels like" temperature is above 10 degrees. We use weather.com to be consistent. There are some days in the morning that it will not be warm enough to be outside but by lunch recess it will have warmed up. Please send your student daily with the items they will need throughout the day. Winter has rapidly descended upon us, students must have boots, snow pants, and gloves to be allowed to play in the snow.
Share a picture with us!
We’re excited to showcase the special moments and achievements of our students and their families. Whether it’s a holiday, cultural tradition, a child’s milestone like riding a bike without training wheels, a big win at a soccer game, welcoming a new pet, or anything else that makes you proud — we’d love to feature it! Here is the link to share a photo and brief description.

Attention 4th Grade Families: Math Placement
If your child is not currently placed in advanced math and you wish to request a math placement review, this parent nomination Google form must be completed by January 12, 2026.
Parent nomination Google form links can also be found on the District 28 website, under Gifted and Talented. Please visit our website for additional information on the district’s Gifted and Talented Services and District Assessments.
If you have a child in grade 3 or grade 5, you should have received an email on November 17 with information on placement review. This process determines placement for 6th grade into one of three math courses: Grade 6, Accelerated 6, or Pre-Algebra 6.
