September

We have had a fantastic start to school! Our first Orientation Event was well attended and I have received a lot of positive feedback from students, staff, and families. Many parents have mentioned how nice it was to meet the teachers and get a chance to see the classrooms before school starts. For those of you that weren't able to attend, all of the presentations are linked below.
The big news from last week is that Megan McFarland, our assistant principal, had a baby and is currently out on leave! Don Concannon will be her long term sub and he started today. He is a retired principal and teacher and he covered for the LMS assistant principal last year while she was out on leave so he is familiar with our school district. He will be in charge of special education at HSS among other responsibilities.
My next newsletter will include dates for the year for the Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade Friday afternoon sing alongs as well as information on our monthly spirit days.
Enjoy the newsletter,
Leah Wheelan, Principal

Intervention Services
We are not going to be providing any nonrequired/informal OT/PT/Speech services for the first month of school while we determine what resources are available after fulfilling our required services for students with IEPS/504s.
Traffic/Safety
Arrival: Thank you for doing such a great job moving the express car drop line along. The students have been exiting the cars quickly.
Dismissal: As always, please be very careful driving past the school at dismissal time as we have a lot of children, adults, dogs, and strollers using the sidewalk and crosswalks. If you are a pedestrian, we ask that you use the crosswalk as we have a staff member there to help with traffic.
Thank You to Facilities
I wanted to use this space to express our deep appreciation for everything the facilities department did for the school this summer. The new music room is beautiful (See photo below) and the entire front of the school looks updated and welcoming! We owed them a huge thank you and that was before they worked magic to get the water main fixed and allow us to keep school open!
Notes from the Nurse
Welcome to a new school year at Hanover Street School. Here are some suggestions to start the year off on the right foot:
Make sure your child comes to school with a water bottle.
If your child has an injury or other medical condition, please let the nurse and teacher know so we can help keep your child safe at school.
If your child is blowing his or her nose A LOT, coughing A LOT or just complaining of not feeling great, please consider keeping your child at home to rest.
Please practice good hygiene. Show your child how to wash hands. Model how to sneeze or cough into your elbow.
Your child should not carry around any medication in his or her backpack. If your child needs to take medication at school, please contact me.
Be sure to take your child to his or her medical provider’s office at least once a year for a physical. Elementary school children should also visit a dentist two times a year, and children should have a professional eye exam.
If you need assistance with medical care, dental care, vision care, clothing or food, please reach out to me. We have many wonderful community resources. I look forward to partnering with you to best support your child and family during this school year.
Take good care,

Morning Meetings at HSS
All of the staff at HSS had training in June on a set of principles called Responsive Classroom. We are implementing one element of the program this year. Each teacher is holding a morning meeting at the start of the day and almost the entire staff attends these gatherings with the students. The meetings include a greeting of each student by name, sharing, a group activity, and a written morning message. Below are some pictures of these meetings in each grade.
