Welcome Back to School!
Dear Hedgesville Elementary Parents and Caregivers;
As we head into our final week before spring break, we want to take a moment to celebrate the hard work and growth we’ve seen from our students this year. Classrooms continue to be filled with engaging learning, creativity, and positive energy, and we are so proud of all they have accomplished.
This last week can be exciting, and we appreciate your support in helping students stay focused, maintain routines, and finish strong. We are looking forward to a great week ahead and hope everyone enjoys a safe, restful, and well-deserved spring break!
Warmly,
Jacqueline Orrence
Principal

Penny Houck Nominated for BCS Service Person of the Year!
We are proud to share that our main office secretary, Ms. Penny Houck, has been nominated for Berkeley County Schools Service Person of the Year! Ms. Penny is often the first face to welcome students, families, and visitors into our building, and she sets the tone each day with care and dedication. She is truly deserving of this recognition.
Please consider joining us in celebrating Ms. Penny at the Recognition Ceremony on April 23, 2026, at Musselman High School. A reception will begin at 6:00 pm, followed by the program at 6:30 pm. This is a special opportunity to recognize her hard work and the impact she has on our school community. We would love to see a strong turnout of staff, families, and community members to show our appreciation and support as she is honored for this achievement.
Spring Book Fair
Our Spring Book Fair is April 27th - May 1st. We are looking for parent volunteers to help with our Book Fair Preview Days and during Book Fair Shopping Week. Please click on the link here to sign-up to help. If you have any questions, please reach out to Ms. Neely on Seesaw or by email (rneely@k12.wv.us)
Second Grade Engages in Interactive Science!
Second grade students have been engaged in an exciting hands-on science activity exploring owl pellets. Through this experience, students are learning about food chains, animal diets, and ecosystems by carefully dissecting pellets to identify bones and other remains of an owl’s prey.
We were also fortunate to have Susan Fluharty, a former teacher, lead this learning experience. Her expertise and enthusiasm brought the activity to life for our students, and we greatly appreciate her time and dedication to working with our second graders.
This activity has sparked curiosity and meaningful discussions, allowing students to apply their science knowledge in a fun and interactive way. It has been great to see their enthusiasm and engagement as they make connections between what they are learning and the natural world.

April 16: Kindergarten Open House-Save the Date!
Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year is now open! Since March 1, families have been able to begin the process conveniently from home through online registration.
Once the online registration is complete, our enrollment secretary, Ms. Penny Houck, will follow up by phone or email to schedule a specific time for your family to attend our Kindergarten Open House on April 16. This scheduled approach helps ensure a smooth and welcoming experience as you visit the school, meet our staff, and learn more about the year ahead. Ms. Houck will also reach out if any required documents are missing or need to be resubmitted. If you have already completed the online enrollment and have questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact Ms. Houck at 304-754-3341 to schedule your appointment. This will help ensure you are fully prepared and allow us to provide a smooth and efficient experience for your visit.
We are excited to welcome our newest students and begin building strong partnerships with their families from the very start.
Purple-Up Spirit Week-April 20-24
In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, our school will be celebrating Spirit Week to honor and support the many students and families connected to military service. This week provides a special opportunity for our school community to show appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions made by military children and their families.
Each day will feature a different theme for students and staff to participate in. On Monday, April 20, we will begin with Military Monday, where students are invited to wear a shirt representing their favorite branch of the military, such as the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, or Space Force. On Tuesday, April 21, we will celebrate Crazy Camo Day, encouraging everyone to wear camouflage clothing. Wednesday, April 22 will be Red, White, and Blue Day, when students and staff can wear these patriotic colors to show support for our military families.
The celebration will continue on Thursday, April 23 with Purple Up Day, a day dedicated to wearing purple in honor of military children. Purple represents all branches of the military and symbolizes the strength and resilience of military families. We will conclude the week on Friday, April 24 with Red Day, when students and staff are encouraged to wear red to remember and recognize those who are deployed.
We look forward to seeing our school community come together throughout the week as we celebrate and support our military-connected students and families. Thank you for helping us recognize and honor the important role military children play in our community.
April 28: An Evening of Arts and Culture
Celebrate our second graders’ creativity at our Evening of Arts and Culture, from 4:30–5:30 pm, on April 28. Students in Ms. Exline, Ms. Wareham, and Ms. Zimmerman’s classes will present a curated art show featuring a variety of pieces they’ve created this semester—paintings, drawings, sculptures, and more. Student artists will be on hand to share what inspired their work and the techniques they were taught by Ms. Hostetter. The Art Show will be held in the Art Room and the Hedgesville Art Gallery, located on the 2nd floor. Parents, please enter through the front door of the school.
Then, at 6:00 pm in the gym, it is time for our Spring Concert, featuring performances by Mr. Darr, Ms. Pyne, Mr. Robinson, and Ms. Underwood’s classes as directed by Mr. Youngblood. It’s a wonderful chance to see your children shine in both the visual and performing arts.
All families are warmly invited—come celebrate your child’s hard work and creativity!
