Eddy Elementary Updates

October 30, 2024

Eddy ElementaryUpdatesOctober 30, 2024

Fall Is Upon Us Fall Is Upon Us

October has been a productive month! Classroom routines are up and running, students are learning deeply, and examining literature, scientific concepts, mathematics, and the world around us, learning new skills in PE, Music, Art, Tech, and Library specialist classes, and interventionists and specialist teachers are supporting and extending student learning. Our bustling schedule allows students the opportunity to engage deeply in ELA (English Language Arts) and Math daily, and Science, Social Studies, and specialist classes throughout the school week. This year, we have tried something new with our schedule, and we are rotating when students have their daily special, ELA, math, lunch and recess throughout the week. This means that students may have ELA with their teacher first thing in the morning on Mondays and Fridays, and in the afternoons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The intent was to vary the time of day, allowing all students the opportunity to have certain subject areas first thing in the day, middle of the day, and in the afternoon. So far, we have had great feedback from students and staff, though we are still getting the hang of which recess and lunch we have on which day!

Now that we are two months into school, you may find that students are being assigned "reading" as their homework, and sometimes this may be in addition to a few other practice problems in math or another subject. Research on homework tells us that the return on student learning is not significant, and in fact homework is better suited to building routines and good academic habits than significantly impacting student learning. Therefore, you can help your student with homework by helping them to carve out a consistent time and space to complete their homework: have your student work in an area that allows them to focus but is also able to monitored by an adult (sometimes the kitchen table works well, for other families another room may work better); provide students with a consistent time and space; ensure they have a pleasant and comfortable seating and lighting; and be available if possible to answer questions. Productive struggle is ok, but homework should not be causing strife or arguments at home, and should not result in tears or anxiety. If this is the case for your student, please be sure to let your student's teacher know, and we may adjust accordingly. One of the habits you can help your student learn around homework consistency of work completion and also encourage them to read!

October 31 - Crazy Hat Day!

As in years past, on October 31, we ask that students do not wear costumes to school if they celebrate Halloween. This is because parts of a costume may go missing or break; instead, we will have a crazy hat spirit day on Thursday, October 31! Please encourage your student to participate if you would like (this is optional of course). Thank you for your understanding.

Picture Makeup Day - Friday, November 1

Picture Makeup Day (for those students who missed picture day, or who would like a retake for their photo) will be this Friday, November 1. We will also have our fifth grade class photo taken on Friday at 7:50am sharp. Please make sure that your fifth grader is at school promptly on Friday, as we are unable to reschedule this photo.

Danny The Dog

Do you know Danny The Dog? He is a classroom assistance dog, available to work with all students at Eddy Elementary. Danny is a hard working dog, and works five days a week at Eddy. Danny belongs to our Eddy School Psychologist Jennie Williams. Danny began his training at only eight weeks old and he has been a working classroom assistance dog since he was 17 months old. He was trained by NEADS, which is an organization in central Massachusetts that has been training service dogs for over 25 years. It takes a tremendous amount of time and resources to train one dog. Anyone who is matched with a dog is asked to fundraise to help defer the cost of their dog's training. Because of the enormous positive impact that Danny The Dog has on our Eddy community, we are letting our community know that Danny needs financial support as being an officially-trained NEADS dog. Any support for Danny would be greatly appreciated, and this is completely optional. NEADS is a recognized nonprofit organization so any donation is tax deductible.

Music Update

Eddy instrumentalists are doing great! The second year players had a fun time playing with the high school Pep band at Nauset’s homecoming game last Friday. First year players are preparing for their very first performance which will take place on November 20th at 6pm. We also have a new Instagram page, so be sure to follow us on Instagram @eddyschoolmusic. Don't forget that all fourth and fifth graders are welcome to join the Chorus with Mr. Colgan, which meets after school on Tuesdays. If your student is interested in playing a musical instrument, please contact Mrs. Faris. Students may do both: play an instrumental music AND sing in the chorus!

Musically,

Mrs. Faris and Mr. Colgan

Thank You Meg Morris! ♺

A big thank you to Meg Morris from the Brewster Recycling Commission for coming to Eddy last week to remind students about the why and the how of composting and recycling. Thank you Ms. Morris!

COVID and Flu Vaccine Clinic

There will be a COVID and flu vaccine clinic on Thursday, November 14, 2024 between 3:00pm and 5:00pm at Stony Brook Elementary School. If you would like to participate, you must register online to schedule an appointment. Go here to sign up, or click here for the flyer for more information.

Millstone Road Project

You may have seen the signs on Main Street and throughout town: the Millstone Road Improvement Project begins on Monday, November 4. There will be more traffic starting at 7:30am each morning, which will not impact bus routes, but may impact those families who drive their students to school. If you drive your student to school, please be sure to leave enough time to drop your student off no later than 7:40am. Thank you for your assistance with this! Curriculum Updates

  • The grade five team has been continuing their work with human rights in ELA. In class we are reading Esperanza Rising and making connections to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to analyze when various rights are threatened or violated. In mathematics, students are working on multiplication of multi digit whole numbers, volume of rectangular prisms, and applying a variety of division strategies. Students in science class are making observations of the water cycle while also learning about the significant role that fresh water plays on our planet. Then in social studies, students are learning about the thirteen colonies and the reasons for and impact of colonization in North America.
  • Fourth grade has started the new EL reading curriculum by studying poetry. We have been reading the book Love That Dog by Sharon Creech along with analyzing poems written by well known poets. Students are identifying the characteristics of poetry, determining the theme, and finding supporting details in order to write a summary about what they are reading. In math, we have just started learning about multiplicative comparisons, factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. We also had an exciting field trip with our Kindergarten buddies at the Hay Property where we will all become tree experts, thanks to our friends at Brewster Conservation Trust and Mass Audubon. Fourth grade will welcome an educator from the Chatham Marconi Maritime Museum who will lead us through hands-on sound and energy activities. In social studies, students are researching Native American life and culture, and will be creating a project to share their learning.
  • The third grade had their first field trip to the Brewster Gristmill and Herring Run this week. Students learned about the historic factory village, observed how our town miller grinds corn into corn meal, looked at a variety of historical artifacts in the museum, and learned about the life cycle of alewives in our herring run. Thank you to volunteers at the Gristmill and members of the Brewster Department of Natural Resources for their support and assistance of helping our students to learn more about Brewster! In math, students are diligently practicing their multiplication facts and learning how to use the commutative and distributive properties of multiplication. In science, topics of weather and climate are being wrapped up and in ELA with our new Expeditionary Learning curriculum, students are learning about how students from around the world overcome learning challenges by reading about various countries, education obstacles they face, and how they work to overcome these obstacles, comparing and contrasting this to education in the United States. It continues to be a busy and exciting fall in third grade!

Reminder of Wellness Policy - from Nurse Miller and Principal Guditus

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to take a moment to remind you that both the Nauset Schools District Wellness Policy and the Brewster Elementary Schools Parent/Caregiver/Student Handbook provide similar guidelines for classroom celebrations. While the policy specifically addresses birthday celebrations, these guidelines also apply to other events, such as Halloween and Valentines Day. I have included the District Wellness Policy regarding food in the classroom, and you can explore more details in the handbook here: Eddy Handbook.

In line with our commitment to promoting healthy habits, I have also included some healthy snack ideas. These suggestions can be useful for curriculum-based events involving food or as inspiration for everyday snacking. Thank you for your continued support in helping us foster a healthy and positive environment for all students.

Food in the Classroom- Nauset School District Wellness Policy

Students with severe food allergies are enrolled in our school, and we must take responsible steps to ensure their well-being by exercising control over the food products that are distributed to children in school.

1. Food Allergies and dietary restrictions: Schools should not allow students to share foods or beverages during meal or snack times, given concerns about allergies and other restrictions on some children's diets.

2. Birthday celebrations will focus on recognizing each child as unique and important. Teachers and classmates will recognize students in the classroom in imaginative ways. The celebrations will be NON-FOOD. We ask for your cooperation in making our school a safe and healthy place for all.

3. Curriculum-based events that involve food will be limited throughout the year. Recognizing that these curriculum events are anticipated educational and social activities for school children, the following guidelines will be instituted:

  • Teachers will provide 48-hour notice to the School Nurse and Principal for a planned classroom curriculum event.
  • Classroom curriculum events will include healthy snack options. Foods will be checked before a planned curriculum event by the school nurse to evaluate for food allergens that are unsafe for students with food allergies in classrooms. To protect the safety of students with life-threatening food allergies, foods must have a nutritional label/ingredient list attached. Fresh Fruits and vegetables do not require a label.

4. Teachers/parents are encouraged to choose non-food-related activities as an alternative to traditional food-focused curriculum events.

5. Schools will provide a list of healthy snack ideas to parents/caregivers annually.

6. Schools will not use food as a reward for good behavior or academic performance within the classroom.

Meet The Eddy Staff: Ms. Brekke

Ms. Brekke was born and raised in central Massachusetts, and has spent summers on Cape Cod for as long as she can remember. Life took Ms. Brekke to the midwest, where she raised her children and taught in a school district 20 miles north of Milwaukee. Ms. Brekke's daughter still lives in Wisconsin and is engaged to be married in August of 2025; her son graduated from college in May and is now living and working in Nashville. Ms. Brekke was fortunate to work in an incredible district in Wisconsin that provided her with the opportunity to teach several grades subjects, including Kindergarten, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade as well as being a middle school math specialist. It has been Ms. Brekke's dream to live and teach in Brewster, and she feels so very lucky to be here teaching and living in this community near her family!

Meet The Eddy Staff: Mr. Colgan

Ben Colgan is the new Music & Chorus teacher at Stony Brook Elementary and Eddy Elementary schools! A former student of the Brewster Elementary schools and Nauset Regional Middle and High schools, Ben is eager to give back to the district that nurtured him as a child. He loves helping to develop people's musical abilities and self-confidence, and has worked with musicians of all ages and talents. Outside of the classroom, Ben loves working in musical theatre, reading, and spending time with family and peers; he is also the Minister of Music at the South Yarmouth United Methodist Church. In the coming years, Ben is looking forward to continuing to teach and learn within the Nauset Schools and ensure that every child has access to a quality music education.

Fall Conferences - thank you

Thank you to all the families who were able to attend the Fall Parent/Caregiver-Teacher-Student Conferences last week. Your participation allows us to have two-way communication about your student's progress, share any concerns you have, and share any concerns your student's teacher may have. We will hold spring conferences in March 20-21, 2025. You do not need to wait for a conference to have a conversation with your student's teacher! If you have information to share or a concern to express, please do not hesitate to reach out directly to your student's teacher. Communication and working together is key to our students' success!

Hispanic Heritage Month 9/15-10/15

Hispanic Heritage Month was celebrated through October 15. Teachers in all different roles incorporated leaders from throughout different curriculum areas and roles into their classroom when possible, ranging from picture books with Hispanic main characters to learning about leaders with Hispanic heritage. Recognizing that Hispanic Heritage should not just be celebrated from September 15 to October 15, recognizing this month's importance helps give students an appreciation and understanding for cultures that may be similar or different to their own, and build their empathy of leaders, humans, and folks from both around the world and around the corner.

Personal Electronic Devices - reminder

This is a reminder about students' personal electronic devices: students are not permitted to use their personal electronic devices during the school day, including phones, tablets, smart watches, and other personal electronic devices. This policy applies to both the school day, as well as before and after school, including on school buses. If your student ever needs to get a hold of a parent or caregiver, they may always ask to call from the main office, and Mrs. Reeves can assist with having your student call you; if your student is not feeling well, they may let their teacher know that they need to see Nurse Miller, and she can assess their well-being and be in touch with you if there is a medical concern. If you ever need to get a hold of your student, please just call the main office, and we will get a message to your student in a timely manner. If students have a phone, it should be turned off and stowed away; if a student has a smart watch, they are not permitted to text or call during the school day or on the bus. Instead, if there is a problem, your student should speak to an adult at school and we can help solve the problem! Thank you for your help with enforcing this policy. If you have any questions about it, do not hesitate to let Principal Guditus know. This policy is listed on p.13 of the Brewster Elementary Schools Handbook 24-25 under "Personal Technology Devices."
