Report Cards

For grades 1-4, marks closed last week. Reports cards are available in the X2 Family Portal on December 14. Please let the school know if you are interested in a hard copy. Our elementary report cards are standards-based. Instead of letter grades, students receive marks or a code that show how well they have mastered the skills.

PBIS Hallway Focus Week

Next week students will be reviewing expectations for the hallway with their classroom teachers, specialists, and in the dining room during lunches with Mr. Fredette and Mrs. Dolan.

Enrichments This Week

This week is a great time to highlight the huge part the BSA plays in our students' school experience. Three grade levels had enrichment programs that were organized and funded by the BSA. Our first grade students had a sound and light program from the Acton Discovery Museum. Second grade had a Sub Zero Science Enrichment and Fourth graders had a visit from children's author, Rob Buyea https://www.robbuyea.com/. Thank you to all your contributions and the support of the BSA!

Hour of Code

Byam students and Mrs. Grout were extremely excited to participate in the Hour of Code in their computer class this week. The Hour of Code https://hourofcode.com/us is an annual worldwide event held the second week in December each year during Computer Science Education Week. The event is designed to inspire students and promote computer science.

Holiday Support

Byam Cares:

Every year we collect gift cards from Walmart, Target, or local grocery stores for our Byam Cares program. This program gives Byam families in financial need a boost during difficult financial times. While we use the gift cards mostly during the holidays, we also have times not related to holidays when families are in need.

Any family interested in donating a gift card can do so by donating a Walmart, Target, or local grocery store gift card. The gift card(s) can be put in a sealed envelope marked "Byam Cares" and brought into the Byam office. School counselor Lyndsey O'Neil and Byam school nurse Amy Regan are facilitating this project.

Another Way to Support Byam Families in need:

The holiday season is upon us, and we are hoping to send some holiday cheer to our Byam families in need. In addition to our Byam Cares program, this year Ms. O'Neal created a wish list on amazon to provide an option to buy toys, games, books, and other gifts our students in need would love to receive. All of the purchases will be mailed to Byam and then distributed to our families. If you are interested in buying a gift, please take a look at the link below. Any and all support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your generosity and kindness for both our Byam Cares and our Byam Amazon projects during the holiday season!

Health Tips from the Nurse's Office

As we move into the winter months, there are strategies to keep our school community safe and healthy. Remember to follow these simple precautions to prevent illness:

  • Stay home if feeling sick
  • Avoid contact with individuals who are sick
  • Avoid sharing cups and utensils
  • Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash

This is the time of year where we typically see an increase in the number of illnesses in our schools. Based on information from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, influenza (flu) activity is increasing nationally, and troubling early data showing drops in flu vaccine uptake this season, the CDC has issued an urgent reminder about the importance of vaccinating for flu. Hospitalization rates in kids for respiratory illnesses are among the highest seen at this time in about a decade so far this season.

Getting a flu shot is the most important action a person can take to prevent flu and its potentially serious complications. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine as soon as possible to protect against the flu.

The flu vaccine:

  • Reduces the risk of flu illness
  • Can be given at the same time as a COVID-19 vaccine, for people who are due for both
  • Protects against four different flu viruses - even if an individual has already gotten the flu, other flu viruses are circulating and it’s possible to get flu more than once a season

Staying updated with the COVID-19 boosters will protect against the coronavirus and prevent serious illness. The COVID-19 vaccine and boosters are safe and effective. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly encourages vaccinating for the flu and COVID-19.

Additionally, health care providers have observed an increase in the number of cases of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in children in recent months. Infants and children may be particularly susceptible to seasonal respiratory viral infections during the 2022-2023 fall and winter because they have had limited previous exposure to these respiratory viruses. There has also been many cases of suspected norovirus illness. Please follow the preventative measures listed above to ensure the health and wellness of our school community!

SEL Survey

This week, our students in grades 3-12 took a Social and Emotional Learning survey. The survey content asked students to self-reflect on the following content topics; Sense of Belonging, Supportive Relationships, Growth Mindset, Social Awareness, Self-Management and Emotion Regulation. Results from these surveys will help the district plan supports for our students and will be able to be administered in the future to gauge student growth in these concepts.
