Hello Compass Families!

We have had another great week of student learning, engagement, and fun experiences throughout Compass! It is exciting to see the learning taking place in our classrooms and the progress students are making each day.

Report cards will be shared today, and we look forward to connecting with families during parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday and Thursday next week. These conferences are a great opportunity to celebrate student successes, discuss progress toward learning goals, and continue working together to support each student's growth.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in your child's learning. We appreciate all you do to support our students and staff, and we look forward to seeing many of you next week!

Go Pirates!

Birthday Treats

Celebrations and Birthdays We believe it is important for the school to recognize our students on their birthday and other special days. However, for several reasons including increased food allergies, preservation of the instructional day, and student equality, students are not allowed to bring treats from home or have flowers/balloons or other items delivered to the classroom for birthdays, going-away parties, or other personal events. Each classroom teacher will recognize the student in a special way to celebrate his or her birthday. If a student receives a delivery at school, the student will be notified to come to the office to view the item. Parents will be responsible for transporting the item home. Birthday party invitations may only be distributed if invitations are given to every student in the class.

In the Platte County R-3 School District, we believe student achievement occurs through clearly defined standards and authentic learning opportunities. We strive to provide accurate, meaningful, and timely feedback to both students and parents throughout the learning process. Reporting of student achievement reflects student progress toward mastery of key academic concepts and identifies multiple pathways to deeper learning.

This school year, we are updating our elementary standards-based scoring guide from a 1-4 scale to five categories: Not Yet (NY), Developing (D), Approaching (A), Proficient (P) and Exceeding (E). These categories provide a clearer picture of where students are in their learning and what they need to continue growing.

A student’s proficiency level is based on evidence gathered through multiple assessments and learning experiences over time, not simply an accumulation of points or assignment grades. Teachers consider the most consistent and recent evidence to determine a student’s current understanding and ability to demonstrate grade-level standards.

Our goal is to provide families with meaningful information about student progress, celebrate growth, and help every learner continue moving forward.

Pirates ROCK and Portrait of a Graduate

Since 2005, Pirates ROCK (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) has helped shape a strong culture of character across Platte County School District. More than 20 years later and beginning with the 2026-27 school year, we're building on that tradition by aligning Pirates ROCK with our Portrait of a Graduate essential skills.

This evolution creates a more consistent, student-centered approach to character development by focusing on the six essential skills that prepare learners to thrive in school, careers, and life. Students will continue to be recognized for demonstrating outstanding character while developing the competencies that support our mission of ensuring every learner thrives in an ever-changing world with confidence and resilience, all through a consistent framework and shared language as they grow from kindergarten through graduation.

Throughout the year, we'll focus on these essential skills:

  • October/November: Self-Awareness
  • December/January: Personal Connections
  • February: Personal Growth
  • March: Problem-Solving
  • April: Global Connections

Student Device Insurance - Enrollment Extended Until October 29

Device insurance for student devices has moved to a new system for the 2026-27 school year. Families who wish to participate must enroll by October 29 through your PowerSchool Parent Portal account.

  • How to Enroll: Log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal account and complete the Insurance Form under "Forms." Via the PowerSchool app, go to "More," then "Forms." The $30 enrollment fee will be collected within the form.

Without insurance, families are responsible for the increased repair or full replacement costs. Visit the One-to-One Learning page of our website for additional Student Device FAQs and responsibilities.
