School Principal's Message

Reutter School Families,

In this week's publication, we are excited to highlight several instructional components showcasing the fantastic learning taking place across our different academic teams. In addition to our classroom achievements, our school community recognized Red Ribbon Week with special daily morning announcement messages emphasizing healthy choices, as well as a school-wide "Wear Red" day on Wednesday. We wrapped up the week with a festive Friday in anticipation of Halloween, where students and staff enjoyed dressing up in costumes, participating in homeroom gatherings, and attending our grade-level socials.

Alongside these positive highlights, we are also remaining attentive to the overall well-being of our students. Recently, we have noticed an increase in mental health concerns, particularly among our sixth-grade students. Supporting our students' emotional and mental health is just as vital as supporting their academic growth.

To address these needs directly, Mrs. Roberts, our School Counselor, and I visited sixth grade homerooms throughout the course of week during the supplemental class period. Our goal was to bring greater awareness to mental health, normalize discussions around emotional well-being, and provide clear avenues and practical resources for students to seek assistance whenever they need it.

We also want to ensure our families feel fully supported. Additional resources and guidance for parents regarding adolescent mental health have been enclosed in this week’s issue of Our Week at Reutter School. I encourage you to review these materials and keep an open line of communication with your child. Thank you for your continued partnership and dedication to making Reutter School a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for all of our students.

As we head into the holiday season, our school community is well aware that some families may need extra support in order to have a much deserved Thanksgiving feast this year. Therefore, our Counselor Helpers will be collecting non-perishable foods to help us create baskets filled with a balanced meal that we can then distribute to these families. With your help, our food drive will ensure no family goes hungry in our community this holiday season. In order to serve a maximum number of families a full meal, each homeroom has been assigned a specific item (listed below in the newsletter). Food items will be collected until Friday, November 13. Items may be dropped off in the main office vestibule between 7:30am-1:30pm, Monday-Friday. Please see Mrs. Roberts' letter in Our Week at Reutter School publication.

As a quick scheduling reminder, please note that school will only be in session next Monday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3.

Happy Halloween!

Sincerely,

Mr. Theodore Peters

Principal

Governor’s Educator of the Year (GEOY) Program

Dear Franklin Community,

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) strives to recognize educators who have gone above and beyond in their service to New Jersey’s students. Now, more than ever, is the time to celebrate New Jersey’s outstanding educators. Therefore, Franklin Township Schools will participate in the Governor’s Educator of the Year (GEOY) program to honor the hardworking teachers and educational services professionals for their dedication to students and the profession. This program promotes a culture that celebrates excellence and brings public attention to the work of outstanding educators.

As such, do you know a teacher OR educational services professional who is dedicated, inspiring, and making a difference? As outlined in the Governor's Educator of the Year program, the Township of Franklin Public School District would like to recognize one teacher from each school and one educational service professional from the district as recipients of the 2026-2027 "Educator of the Year" award.

Please take a moment to fill out your Governor’s Educator of the Year recommendation using this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdyrIm79ZmEDSl4Fkknr78D8OCTLDFIbHDcooqIvb1mYyFbtA/viewform. The response form will be open from 10/26/26 to 11/13/26.

Grade 6 ELA

In Mrs. Scaffo’s sixth-grade ELA classes, students are learning about discovering an author's tone and mood. Students are actively analyzing how an author’s specific word choices create a distinct tone, as well as examining how those elements evoke particular emotional responses and moods in the reader.

Spooktacular stories are brewing at Reutter School!

Today, our fifth graders in Mrs. Nelson, Miss Rey, and Miss Jacob’s ELA classes put their creative writing skills to the test during a Halloween-themed "Spooky Writing" assignment. Students used descriptive language, suspenseful plot twists, and eerie imagery to craft their very own haunt-tastic tales.

Grade 6 Math

Sixth-grade math students in Mrs. Busler's classes are taking their learning to the next level by exploring ratios and proportions through a hands-on "CSI" investigation. Using real world body proportions, students put their problem solving skills to the test as math detectives, analyzing measurements, setting up proportional relationships, and cracking the case while seeing math come to life.

Mental Health Resources Mental Health Resources

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the overall well-being of our students, we are pleased to share valuable resources from Erika’s Lighthouse: A Beacon of Hope for Adolescent Depression, a highly respected mental health education and advocacy organization. Erika’s Lighthouse provides free mental health awareness programs designed to help families gain a deeper understanding of mental health issues and learn how to foster open, meaningful conversations with their children about their emotional well-being.

The core goals of these programs include:

  • Raising awareness of good mental health.

  • Recognizing signs of depression as well as risk and warning signs of suicide.

  • Reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

  • Encouraging help-seeking skills and connecting students with additional support services when needed.

A key component of the Erika’s Lighthouse initiative is family engagement through education and awareness. To support you at home, they have developed two accessible resources to help facilitate conversations with your child about mental health:

  1. “We All Have Mental Health” Workbook: Written by parents, for parents, this guide is designed to help you promote and nurture good mental health within your home as part of their Family Workbook Series on Mental Health & Depression. You may access the workbook directly online at https://erikaslighthouse.org.

  2. On-Demand Virtual Family Workshop: A short, on-demand video workshop is available for you to view at your convenience. This workshop offers valuable insight into adolescent mental health and depression, helps prepare you for discussions at home, and previews the supportive materials students encounter. You may view the workshop online at https://erikaslighthouse.org.

These fact-based, student-friendly, and hopeful programs promote a vital message that every child and family needs to hear: Everyone deserves to have good mental health; depression is common and treatable; and there is always hope and help. You are never alone.
