Our Lady of Good Counsel School
Term 1 Week 6 Newsletter
NEWS FROM MRS MCCLUE
Dear Families,
I had the great privilege of spending the day with our Year 6 students at their camp in Dwellingup yesterday. The students were having a fabulous time, and I was able to witness their leadership and teamwork skills in action as they built rafts and developed their orienteering skills.

Finance Officer
I wish to advise that Marcia Pekin, our current FInance Officer will be finishing in her role at OLGC tomorrow (Friday 8 March). Marcia has been successful in gaining employment in the corporate sector, and we thank her for her valuable contribution to our school during her time here, and wish her the very best of luck for the future.
Mrs Gabbi Muir has been appointed to replace Marcia, and I am sure you will join me in making Gabbi feel very welcome to OLGC.
Virginia Benedetti
Virginia Benedetti, mother of Charlie (Y2) and Millie (PP) was in a serious car accident over the weekend. She is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Please keep Virginia in your prayers. The school is liaising with the Benedetti family and will provide details of what support is required and how the community can assist, in the coming weeks.
Indigenous Welcome Garden
We would like to acknowledge the City of Stirling for their generous grant towards our Indigenous Welcome Garden. The grant enabled the school to purchase native and bush tucker plants and design a space that will be utilised by all school students. It will assist students in their learning and understanding of the role of First Nations and Noongar people in the development of our area.
The design incorporated various elements including planting local species to attract fauna, waterwise and bush tucker plantings. We also planted some native trees to provide shade to this area. Once plantings were completed, areas were either mulched or covered with rocks or stones to promote water wise practices.
Please stop by to view the lovely space as the garden continues to grow and flourish.
Enrolments – Pre-Kindy and Kindy Program: 2025 and 2026
If you have a younger sibling, friend or family member who will be seeking enrolment in our Pre-Kindy or Kindy program for 2025 or 2026 please contact the administration staff as soon as possible. These places are filling up very fast (with a waitlist already in place for Pre-Kindy 2025) and we would hate for any siblings to miss out on enrolling.
Friends or family members that would like to see what OLGC can offer their child, should submit an EOI via our new website www.olgc.wa.edu.au or by contacting the office on 6242 3400 for an application, or to book a school tour.
NEWS FROM MRS BARFOOT
PROJECT COMPASSION
Samoa may be a country surrounded by water, but access to clean drinking water is scarce in some areas, with many families facing extreme hardship as a result.
Leaia lives with her five children, husband, brother and sister-in-law on the island of Upolu in Samoa. Not having access to a reliable source of clean water caused Leaia a lot of worry.
Their home is not connected to a piped water system, so they had to rely solely on rainwater collected in old fridges. When their water ran out, Leaia had to walk with her young children to collect water in buckets and containers from a neighbour down the street.
With the support of Caritas Australia's local partner, Caritas Samoa, a water tank was installed at Leaia's home. She and her family now have a steady supply of clean drinking water at home. Next year, they will also have a toilet built, with the support of Caritas Samoa, which will further improve their health and living conditions.
“We are very thankful and grateful for the water tank. It has helped us so much and made our daily life easier,” Leaia said.

Memory is 26 years old and lives in rural Malawi. As the eldest child in a low-income farming family, Memory had to take on many household chores and farming activities to support her parents. They struggled to pay for Memory’s school fees and school supplies, and Memory often had to walk to school barefooted.
With the support of Caritas Australia and its partner the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM), Memory was able to enrol at a technical college where she learnt technical skills in carpentry. She undertook a three-year carpentry course, with CADECOM supporting part of her tuition and boarding fees.
Memory became the first female carpenter from her village. Today, she works as a carpenter at one of Malawi’s largest hydroelectric power stations. With the income from her job, she can provide financial support to her family and inspire other young women in her community so that they may have the opportunity to succeed in a male-dominated industry.

NAPLAN
Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in NAPLAN, a nationwide assessment designed to evaluate students' literacy and numeracy skills across Australia. This assessment, conducted annually for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, provides valuable insights into their progress and proficiency in these foundational skills. It's important to note that while NAPLAN offers a snapshot of student performance, it's just one piece of the broader educational puzzle.
At OLGC, we view NAPLAN as a diagnostic tool, offering valuable data that informs our teaching strategies and helps tailor learning experiences to meet individual needs. It's an opportunity for us to identify areas of strength and areas that may require additional support for our students.
It's crucial to emphasise that NAPLAN results do not define a student's capabilities comprehensively. Our school prioritises holistic development, encompassing not only academic excellence but also the nurturing of creativity, critical thinking, resilience, and social skills.
As we approach the NAPLAN period, we encourage a balanced perspective. While it serves as a benchmark for educational progress, it's equally important to maintain a supportive and encouraging environment for our students. We strive to prepare them not just for assessments but for a lifelong journey of learning and growth.
We encourage open dialogue and support from both school and home during this period. Your involvement and encouragement play a significant role in fostering a positive attitude towards assessments and learning in general.
At OLGC we view NAPLAN as an opportunity for insight and improvement, working collaboratively to ensure every student feels supported, empowered, and motivated to reach their full potential.
News from Year 5
Over the past five weeks, the Year 5s and 6s have been very lucky to participate in surfing lessons at Trigg Beach. What a blast! We have had the most wonderful time learning to ride the waves. It hasn’t always been easy as we all have had our fair share of falling off our boards and getting tumbled. We have taken lot of sand back to school sometimes 😊
We have smiled, laughed out loud and had to be resilient when things became difficult and staying on the board and catching a wave was really hard. We have learned that when we put our mind to it and practise, we can do anything. We are grateful to our wonderful coaches who taught and supported us so well. Hang ten dudes 😊
