As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the United States, I’ve found myself reflecting on the kind of leadership that has always shaped our country at its best: quiet courage, shared responsibility, and people working together for something greater than themselves.

As a former history teacher, I’ve always believed the past helps us better understand the responsibility we carry in shaping the future. Years ago, after first learning about Richard Winters through Band of Brothers and the kind of leadership he embodied, I admired him so much that I even tried to convince my husband that “Winters” should be our son’s name.

What stayed with me was not just his service during World War II, but the humility, steadiness, and responsibility he brought to leadership. Winters once said great leaders “lead from the front,” not by standing above others, but by sharing the burden and setting the example beside the people they serve.

That message feels especially meaningful as we close another school year.

Every day, educators lead from the front in their own way: supporting students, encouraging colleagues, solving problems, and continuing to show up even when the work is hard. Our collective impact is built in those daily moments of collaboration, compassion, and commitment.

Thank you to all of our North State educators who show up for our school communities every day. This year, we truly Shaped Tomorrow, Together.

Cheers,

Jillian
