Snow is Coming (or so the meteorologists think!)

With a significant snowstorm expected this weekend, we want to share how we’re prepared should weather impact our return to school on Monday.

As shared by Dr. Christopher, if conditions require, we anticipate using our one built-in snow day on Monday. If additional days are needed beyond that, we will transition to Flexible Instruction Days (FID) to avoid extending the school year further into June.

To prepare, all students will bring their district-issued iPad home on Friday, January 23. Please note that chargers will not be sent home. Teachers completed a “tech-free Friday” so devices are fully charged and will come home powered off. We ask for your help ensuring devices remain off and unused unless a FID is called (Tuesday at the earliest). These devices are learning tools and should not be used for weekend entertainment. Please note that a dead battery will not be considered an excused absence on a FID.

Families will receive specific information about their child’s FID schedule from their homeroom teacher and special education case manager, if applicable. General schedules for live (synchronous) sessions, along with resources to help connect devices to home Wi-Fi, are linked below.

Each iPad also includes a Snowflake app with all essential FID information, available at any time.

Attendance will be taken during live sessions, and students must be present to avoid an unexcused absence.

We recognize that weather disruptions can be stressful for families. If you encounter any challenges, please reach out to your child’s teacher—we’re happy to help. While it’s been a while since we’ve needed to use FIDs, our team has worked closely together and with students to practice and prepare. So if your child says they don’t know what to do… we promise, they do. 🙂

Unity Week at FHE was a meaningful reminder of who we are and how we care for one another.

We began the week by focusing on mental health and emotional well-being, with students and staff wearing green to show support and to reinforce the importance of caring for our minds and feelings. Midweek, students reflected on what makes them feel a sense of belonging at school, sharing powerful messages about why FHE is a place where everyone matters.

Buddy classes came together to learn about unity and inclusion, creating paper “unity links” that captured how students can promote kindness and connection at school and beyond. On Kindness Challenge Day, our hallways and classrooms were filled with thoughtful actions as students intentionally practiced acts of kindness toward others.

We wrapped up Unity Week by celebrating student voice and learning through the Bobcat Equity Team’s Unity Resource Table, showcasing unity chains and student-created infographics about community issues and ways to help.

Unity Week highlighted the compassion, empathy, and sense of belonging that make our school community such a special place—and reminded us that when we work together, we are stronger.

Volunteer Clearances

We love having our families volunteer throughout the building. In order to volunteer, adults are required to have their clearances on file with us. Clearances can take 4-6 weeks to acquire, so please be sure to get the process started if you're looking to volunteer this Fall.
