The Buzz from Roxbury Village School

June 12, 2023 June 12, 2023

This will be the last official "Buzz" newsletter for the 2022-2023 school year. As a reminder, our last day of school is Thursday June 15th. It will be an early release day and we will be dismissing at NOON on that day. Bridges will not be in session so all caregivers are encouraged to get in touch with Tina if there are changes that need to be made to your student's dismissal plans for that day.

Student tardy or absent? Let Tina know. (802) 262-1506 Student tardy or absent? Let Tina know. (802) 262-1506

Dates to Remember

  • TONIGHT!!! -- Monday 6/12 -- Bridges Play "How to Be a Pirate in Seven Easy Songs" (5:00-6:00)
  • Tuesday 6/13 -- Grade 4 Student Promotion Ceremony (6:00-7:00)
  • Wednesday 6/14 -- Field Day!
  • Thursday 6/15 -- Last day of school -- Students dismissed at NOON

RVS Field Day

RVS Field Day will now take place on Wednesday, June 14th. We have a morning full of fun activities planned. Mr. Chandler has done a great job organizing various events that will take place as students rotate from station to station. Students will enjoy a picnic style lunch outside on that day. Here are a few things to keep in mind so that everyone has a fun day:

  • Apply sunscreen at home before coming to school
  • Wear sneakers
  • Dress for the weather and a day of play
  • Bring a towel to sit on during lunch
  • Bring a change of clothes and/or clothes that can be worn in water

Once again, our amazing Caregiver Group has agreed to sponsor a snow cone machine and inflatable water slide for the afternoon. Please be sure to pack either a change of clothes or clothes your student can wear while getting wet.

Summer Meals

For information on receiving meals in the summer, households can call 2-1-1, the United Way run resource hotline, or go to the USDA Meals for Kids Site Finder. All sites listed are open to all children, 18 and under. Information is available mid-June and any necessary changes are made on a weekly basis.

Kindergarten Update

In the last full week of kindergarten, the emotions were rising; hard to tell what all those are, but it was a mix of fun, sad, happy, excited, anxious, and tired. We had some nice discussions reviewing their kindergarten year. It was wild to think back remembering all we learned and did. We also had discussions about summer and next year. I know they are ready for first and I hope they agree! Academically this past week, we talked about 3D shapes, mapping, force and motion, and we kept practicing reading, writing, and our heart words. We practiced doing puzzles too, not a kindergarten standard, but related to many important skills. It was a sad last week for me to say "See you next year", but glad to know they won't be far away next year. Thank you and have a great summer!

VINS Visit

We really enjoyed our visit from the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) on Thursday, June 8th. The presentation on Watershed Wildlife provided a lot of connections to the work that has been done during our Forest Friday program as students learned about the water cycle. As part of the VINS experience, students traced the path rain travels with a watershed model. Students also met a wood turtle and a red shouldered hawk -- two animals that depend on a healthy watershed for their survival. We also learned how the hawk developed an adaptation so they can eat toads that are normally harmful for other animals to eat. Ask your student about this!

If your student would like to visit VINS over the summer to experience all of the animals they have, please visit the VINS site for more information.

Our school visit from VINS was graciously underwritten by our amazing Caregiver Group. We are grateful for their support as well as everyone who participates in fundraising to make events like this possible for our students. Thank you!

REMINDER -- School Communications Survey

MRPS Communications Coordinator Anna Hipko would love to hear from caregivers to learn 1) what communications channels you currently rely on most, 2) your top preferences for communications channels we should invest more in, 3) how you feel about the quality of our communications to date, 4) how we're doing with personalized and two-way communications, and 5) what you want to learn/hear more about from MRPS! Please take a moment to complete the Montpelier Roxbury School District Annual School Communications Survey. Your responses to this survey will be reviewed alongside responses to our end of year caregiver survey and will greatly help us improve our communications moving forward. The results will be posted on our MRPS Communications webpage.

REMINDER -- MRPS Reporting Form

If you believe you have witnessed or experienced discrimination, bias-based harassment, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, or bullying at MRPS, please report it to a school administrator as possible. If you do not feel comfortable reporting in person, please complete this reporting form. If you have any questions please contact MRPS Director of Social Emotional Learning & Wellness, Jessica Murray, at jessicamurray@mpsvt.org or (802) 505 0435.

REMINDER -- Summer RVS Garden Help

We need your help to keep our gardens growing strong throughout the summer! Please sign up for a week to take care of the RVS gardens -- watering, weeding, and harvesting throughout your week. The better our gardens do in the summer, the more food we'll have to serve to students in the fall. Thanks for your support!
