Idioms & phrases often originate from a variety of sources, including historical events, literature, folklore & everyday experiences. Over time, these phrases gain popularity & become ingrained in language, representing specific ideas or emotions. Break the ice: signifying the start of a conversation comes from the practice of using ships to break through ice-covered waterways to allow other ships to pass. Having the upper hand comes from times of fighting in castles where it was easier to fight down than fight up a spiral staircase.
