Welcome to My World

This last week, our 4th graders were able to experience and reflect on some of the many points of diversity we have in our community. This year's experiences were dyslexia, sensory processing disorder, and speech and language impairment. A big thanks goes out to our parent volunteers, SSPAC, and Ms. Drimmel, our school counselor.

Dyslexia Awareness Month

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. Children and adults with dyslexia struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly, and memorize rote facts such as multiplication tables, among other challenges. But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. While people with dyslexia can be slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities. Dyslexia can’t be “cured” – it is lifelong. But with appropriate early supports, dyslexic individuals can learn to read, write, and spell and can become highly successful students and adults. (Source)

  • Decoding Dyslexia: Resources and October Events

Each week in October, we will feature a message about dyslexia in this newsletter. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative.

Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up (Repeat)

We are looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming fall Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be held on:

Thursday, October 24 @ 7:30am to 3:30 pm

Friday, October 25 @ 7:30am to 3:30 pm

Please note that we are unable to provide conference times on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. These three preceding days, besides being full instructional days, are an important time for teachers to prepare for Thursday and Friday. If you are out of town but available, such as with (some) family vacations, please sign up for a conference slot and then reach out to your child's teacher to coordinate a phone conference.

Weather Appropriate Attire (Repeat)

The rain is here! Although acclimating to rainy weather is a part of growing up in the Pacific Northwest, it is also very helpful to have appropriate attire. Please send your child to school with attire that will project against moderate rain. A rain jacket is a must!

PTO Registration (Repeat)

For your convenience, the PTO is offering online registration. Registration allows you to sign up for a variety of volunteer opportunities, pay the classroom fee, and make an optional donation.
