Welcome Ms. Julie Veal
Julie Veal has been serving as a Spanish Language Interpreter with Douglas County Schools since 2018, interpreting for many different types of meetings between Spanish speaking parents of Hispanic students and the faculty and administration, on behalf of the Departments of Special Education, Student Services, and the Department of Language Services. Ms. Veal has extensive experience interpreting for IEP meetings, Re-evaluation Determination Review and Eligibility Meetings, Manifestation Determination Reviews, SST meetings and teacher/parent conferences.
She holds both a Master’s of Hispanic Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Auburn University and a Professional Certificate for Educational Interpreting from the University of Georgia Continuing Education Program. Ms. Veal is a member of the National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Languages. She also holds a Certificate for Medical Interpreting from the Bridging the Gap program and worked as an on-site medical interpreter for University Hospital in Augusta, GA from 2004-2007, as well as owning her own business as an independent contractor for multiple medical offices. Ms. Veal taught undergraduate level Spanish courses at Augusta State University from 2007-2010. She has traveled to Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador and Spain, serving as a medical clinic interpreter for three consecutive years in Ecuador.
Ms. Veal is excited to serve as the new Bilingual Parent Liaison for Turner Middle School and looks forward to helping to foster parental engagement with the Spanish speaking families here at Turner.

R.A.R.E. Recognition (Students of the Week)
Brianna Parr
Brianna is an 8th grader and was selected by Ms. Stephanie Banks. When asked about Brianna, Ms. Banks stated, “For Student Of the Week I am choosing Brianna Parr. Ms. Parr has started out the year strong in my class. She is a dedicated student who tries her best and is attentive to her work. She works well with others and doesn't mind offering assistance. I'm excited to continue this academic year working with Brianna and to see the continued progress she makes.”
Marques "MJ" Reed
Kensley Adras
Kensley is a 6th grader and was selected by Ms. Labreya Davis. When asked about Kensley, Ms. Davis stated, “Kensley cares about others. He is always helping other classmates not because he wants a thank you, he does it because someone is in need of his help. He is quiet about what he does but you can tell in those moments while watching him that he is supporting his classmates with kind words, encouragement, and non-judgment. Academically, Kensley does well in class, he completes and turns in his work. He participates and asks questions when he does not understand something. He tries hard in class, follows directions, and is very polite.”

Special Notice - Code Red Drill on Monday
Safety Drill On Monday
Parents and Students:
Some may be aware already, but each month we are required to perform safety drills. These allow us to practice safety measures in the event of a real emergency. These are ONLY PRACTICE. On Monday, we will have a "Code Red Intruder Alert Drill". This means that we will simulate an intrusion that causes us to lock down the building and practice A.D.D. (Avoid, Deny, and Defend). Please have a conversation with your student so they know how serious these drills are and to avoid any level of playfulness. Also, we are aware of trauma that may be associated with this kind of drill being so close to the tragic events recently. In weighing the importance of this practice versus the possibility of discomfort, I must move forward with the practice. If you have issues with the drill, I will be happy to discuss it further one-on-one with you. You may contact me directly via remind with your request to speak.
