ACT Review Class
Attention Juniors:
As you know, all PHS North juniors will take the ACT on February 27th, 2019. To perform at your best, you should begin preparing now for this important test. Every PHS North student has access to a free online ACT test prep program called Naviance Test Prep and can access that program through their school Naviance account. The school counselors have introduced all juniors to this program so every junior should know how to access and use this program. We encourage all juniors to begin using that program 3-4 times a week for 30-40 minutes to prepare for the ACT in February.
PHS North will also be offering the ACT Review class again this year to interested juniors who would like a more structured approach to preparing for the ACT. The ACT Review class will be offered on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm in the Lecture Hall at Pickerington High School North. This is a regular school day, but students who register to take the ACT Review course will be excused from their classes to attend the ACT preparation class. The class will be offered by the ACT Review and the course will be taught by Dr. Lynn Dailey, a Capital Univerisity professor. This 8-hour course combined with completion of additional exercises and drills has helped many students improve their performance on the ACT. The course will review the content of the four sections on the ACT: Math, Reading, Science Reasoning and English. Students will receive a workbook with additional practice and drills to work on before they take the test.
The cost for the Jan. 24th ACT Review class is $90.00. To register for the ACT Review class, please call 1-614-834-8886. You can also visit their website at www.actreview.com for additional information and additional dates and times. This class is being offered at North as a service to our students, but please do not contact your school counselor to register. Registration is handled by the ACT Review and you must call the number above to reserve a spot in the class and pay the registration fee. Attached is a flyer about the ACT Review organization and registration information.
Good luck!

Pennies for Patients
The National Honors Society is running Pennies for Patients this year, and although we have seen some success, as a club, and as a school, we hope to make it much bigger. Pennies for Patients benefits cancer patients with Leukemia and Lymphoma, which are both blood cancers. These patients need our change, and we want to be able to help. In years past as a school we have collected $1,725.11 in 2016, $925.54 in 2017, and $632.73 in 2018. As you can see, our earnings have been on the decline; however, we are hoping to turn it around and collect even more than we did in 2016. There are boxes in every class all throughout the school, so it is very easy to donate! All we are asking for is your spare change for cancer patients in need. Please help get the word out and send money with your student to put in their class’s box! Thank you!

Internet Hot Spots
Starting in November, students with limited or no internet access in their homes can gain access to WiFi for their homework and other school projects thanks to a new Pickerington Schools program.
Through the Every-1-Connected program, the district will offer a limited number of free wireless hotspot devices to students who have limited or no internet access at home. Students can borrow the devices from their building media center.
This program is open to Pickerington School students who are fully enrolled in one of the 15 district buildings. Priority will be given to students on the free/reduced lunch list and who have little to no household internet access.
“Every-1-Connected gives students with the greatest need the opportunity to borrow a free hotspot device for two-week periods during the school year,” said Brian Seymour, Director of Instructional Technology. “These devices hook up to district iPads and Chromebooks and allow free access to the internet.”
Seymour said the devices will help students who need internet access complete homework or other major projects. Because multiple students can sign on to a single hotspot, the devices also can be used to facilitate group projects.
There is no cost to students to borrow the hotspots, which were funded by the district and through a grant from T-Mobile.
“The reality is that not every household can afford internet connectivity in the home,” Seymour said. “With our emphasis on one-to-one technology, we knew we needed to find ways to bridge the digital divide and ensure educational equity for all our students. These hotspots are a step in that direction.”
The devices use internet content filtering, and student browsing history is recorded, Seymour said. While only one device may be borrowed per household, the hotspots can be signed out repeatedly throughout the year, based on availability.
For students to participate in the program, parents must complete a form (available from the school and on the district website). The form indicates that parents will assume financial responsibility for the equipment if it is damaged due to intentional reckless, willful, wanton or malicious conduct. The devices are covered under the district’s existing Technology Protection Plan, which is already available to families to cover district-provided Chromebooks and tablets.
Complete information about the program, including instructions for requesting a hotspot, are available online under “Every-1-Connected Program.”
