Superintendent's Update
Dear RCSD Community,
As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to take a moment to reflect on what makes RCSD schools so special. Schools are at the heart of Redwood City, serving families, nurturing curiosity, and helping prepare the next generation of innovators, leaders, and neighbors.
RCSD is grateful for the dedication of its teachers and staff who inspire and care for students each day, and for RCSD’s families who support learning at home and in our schools. RCSD provides a welcoming environment that helps every student learn and thrive.
In recent years, rising costs and unpredictable funding have made it harder for schools across California to sustain essential programs and services. Despite budgeting and earlier reductions, RCSD has had to scale back student supports such as counseling and academic intervention. Without a stable local funding source, RCSD risks losing additional hands-on programs in science, mathematics, reading, and writing—programs that spark discovery and confidence in our students.
To explore solutions that keep resources in classrooms, the Board of Trustees is considering a locally controlled parcel tax measure. The proposal would cost property owners 17.5¢ per square foot of building space each year, with parcels without buildings paying a flat $25. This approach is designed to distribute the cost among different properties.
Your voice is vital in this conversation. Please take a few moments to share your feedback through the survey linked below. Your perspective will help guide decisions that affect the future of RCSD’s schools and students.
In this season of giving thanks, I am especially grateful for the care, generosity, and partnership that defines RCSD. RCSD continues to build schools where every child feels supported, valued, and inspired to succeed.
With sincere appreciation,
John Baker
Superintendent
