Dear HMS Families,

The last school vacation of the year has just passed! Even with all of the snow days, it is hard to believe that the year is almost over. This is certainly a time when focus and attention can be difficult to maintain. Parents and guardians play an essential role in reinforcing the importance of finishing the school year strong. Our teachers, counselors, and administrators are working very hard each day to assist students in reaching their goals. We sincerely appreciate the continued support of all of our families!

The last day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, with an early release at 11:00 AM. We are in the planning process for the 8th grade end of year festivities. The tentative date and time for the 8th grade Promotion Ceremony is Tuesday, June 23 at 12:30 and the 8th grade parade will be Wednesday, June 24 at 9:00 AM. More information regarding these events will be sent to parents in early June.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Josh Belvis

8th Grade Day Trips:

For students who are not going to Washington, D.C., we have booked trips to Starland in Hanover, TreeTop Adventures in Canton, a Brockton Rox Game, and possibly a trip to Heidi’s Hollow. Please keep an eye out for a School Status with trip and cost information as well as permission forms.

Whitman-Hanson WILL and SADD Peer Mentoring Program:

We are happy to announce we have completed our final peer mentor module in grade 6. We are looking to schedule an “end of year celebration" with our mentors and the entire 6th grade. More information to come.

Walking and Riding Bikes:

As mentioned in previous newsletters, many students will take advantage of the nice days, choosing to walk or ride bikes home rather than take the bus. If your child plans to walk or ride a bike, please remind them to be safe as they head home and to be respectful of the businesses and residences they pass along the way. Students should try and stay on sidewalks, off of private property, and should be careful when crossing any streets.

Bike Safety

As e-bikes become more popular, we want to ensure our middle schoolers are staying safe and seen. With higher speeds comes a greater need for visibility and caution. Please talk to your children about using bike lanes and remaining alert. A quick conversation about avoiding distractions and yielding to pedestrians goes a long way in keeping our students safe. Two easy ways to boost safety:

Reflective Gear: Add reflective stickers to bike frames and helmets.

Bright Clothing: Encourage students to wear neon or high-visibility colors.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May brings the opportunity to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Starting in 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated the week of May 4th as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. This week was chosen as it encompassed the dates of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in the U.S. in 1843, and of the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 (in which many Chinese immigrants played a crucial role). In 1990, Congress extended the celebration to a full month, and in 1992, President George H.W. Bush officially designated May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in perpetuity. Take time this month to learn about influential Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and explore the rich and beautiful traditions that come from these communities!

ILLNESSES:

If your child is experiencing more than one symptom such as cough, sore throat, congestion, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or fatigue, they should stay home and be seen by their pediatrician as needed.

  • If your child has a fever of 100 or higher, they need to stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever-reducing medicine.
  • For vomiting and diarrhea, your child should stay home until they have gone 24 hours since their last vomiting or diarrhea episode.
  • Once these guidelines are met, children can return when they feel well enough to participate in school.

ABSENCES:

  • Please remember to call the absence sick line (781-618-7375) or the nurse directly to report your student absent and be sure to include the reason for absence. I will be following up with phone calls home as needed regarding illnesses and absences.
  • If your child does see their doctor for an illness, please ask for a doctor's note for their absence(s) from school so your child’s absence can be marked as excused.
  • If your child is absent due to an illness/medical condition for 5 or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note verifying clearance for return to school is required.

MANDATED SCREENINGS:

  • All mandated screenings for this school year have been completed. If you received a referral letter regarding your child’s screening, please be sure to follow up with your child’s primary care physician and return the completed referral form to me.

INJURIES/RESTRICTIONS:

  • If your child has sustained an injury, we must have a note from the doctor stating the child’s physical limitations/restrictions, including a gym excuse note and order for the use of assistive devices such as crutches or a wheelchair or need for elevator use.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF GRADE 6 STUDENTS:

  • State law requires all students entering grade 7 to submit a current physical and immunization record for the school health records. Please check with your child’s physician to make sure that he/she is up to date with required immunizations. Current physical exams and immunization records need to be sent in to me prior to next school year. You may send in forms now and throughout the summer months.

Thank you and as always please contact me with any questions or concerns.

HMS Drama Presents The Fearsome Pirate Frank HMS Drama Presents The Fearsome Pirate Frank

Get ready to set sail on the high seas of pure imagination! HMS Drama is thrilled to present Fearsome Pirate Frank, a swashbuckling, barnacle-busting adventure packed with daring crew members, clever seafaring schemes, and just the right amount of plunder!

Long before Hollywood made pirates cool, Shakespeare's England was already obsessed — and two razor-sharp narrators are here to prove it! Meet the teenage heartthrob of Elizabethan England, the Fearsome Pirate Frank, adored by every girl in the kingdom despite his actor's maddening inability to remember a single line. But when Frank and his dramatic castmates — including the insufferable prima donna Esmerelda — get actually kidnapped mid-performance by real pirates, the curtain falls on stardom and rises on a life of deck-swabbing misery. The twist? The real Fearsome Pirate Frank is a woman, and she does not take prisoners — well, except for these bumbling actors. Packed with zombie pirates, nightmare sailors, hypnotizing mermaids, a Spiderman cameo, and a plot shamelessly hijacked from a certain beloved pirate blockbuster, this is part spoof, part spectacle, and 100% mayhem on the high seas!

Co-directed by Ms. Storey and Mrs. Foley, this fantastical production features an all-star cast of 5th through 8th grade students who've been working their magic since October. Rehearsals have been full of laughter, hard work, and a touch of high-seas chaos, and now it's time to raise the anchor!

Massachusetts' Own: South Shore's Kristen Merlin Takes the Stage Massachusetts' Own: South Shore's Kristen Merlin Takes the Stage

The Voice Star Returns Home — Live in Concert

Friday, May 15, 2026 • 7:00 PM • Whitman-Hanson Regional High School Performing Arts Center

SOUTH SHORE, MA — Massachusetts has always had a knack for producing extraordinary talent — and the South Shore is no exception. On Friday, May 15, 2026, the region gets to celebrate one of its finest: Kristen Merlin, a born-and-bred South Shore girl who captivated an entire nation on NBC's The Voice, is coming home. She will perform a live concert at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School's state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center — and all of Massachusetts is invited to be there.

A South Shore Star Who Took Massachusetts to the National Stage

Born and raised in Hanson and a graduate of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, Kristen Merlin is the embodiment of South Shore pride. Long before she was a household name, she was recording the National Anthem for Whitman-Hanson athletic events — a recording so breathtaking that it has been played at Panthers games ever since. That voice, honed right here on the South Shore, would go on to stop The Voice coaches in their tracks — and stop a nation in its tracks along with them.

As a top-five finalist on Season 6 of NBC's The Voice, competing on Team Shakira and earning unanimous praise from all four coaches, Kristen put the South Shore on the national map. Millions of viewers across the country watched and cheered — but no one cheered louder than Massachusetts. From the South Shore to Boston and beyond, the Bay State watched one of its own prove that world-class talent grows right here at home.

A Massachusetts Success Story

Kristen's accomplishments read like a blueprint for Massachusetts pride:

✦ Top-Five Finalist, NBC's The Voice, Season 6 — Team Shakira

✦ Debut EP Boomerang reached #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart

✦ Named South Shore's Best Acoustic Solo Act by the Boston Nightlife Awards

✦ Performed the National Anthem at Fenway Park — a Boston institution for a Massachusetts legend

✦ Music degree from the University of New Haven, where she refined a sound that is distinctly hers

✦ Devoted fanbase spanning all of New England and beyond

An Unforgettable Night for All of Massachusetts

Kristen Merlin's live performances are nothing short of electric. Her country-pop sound, powerhouse voice, and full-throttle stage energy have built her a fiercely loyal following across New England. Once the music starts, audiences are on their feet — and they stay there. Heartfelt originals, infectious showmanship, and a genuine connection with her crowd make every Kristen Merlin show a memory that lasts long after the final note fades.

This May 15th concert at Whitman-Hanson's stunning new Performing Arts Center is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to experience one of Massachusetts' greatest voices — up close, in the community that first believed in her. The concert will also support Whitman-Hanson Athletics, which has faced significant budget cuts this school year.
