Twin PeaksMiddle SchoolWeekly RAM Newsletter

Greetings from the Desk of Principal Mills Greetings from the Desk of Principal Mills

Sunday, September 13th, 2026 Sunday, September 13th, 2026

Happy Sunday Ram Families!

I hope you are all catching your breath after a whirlwind of a VERY HOT four-day week! This week on campus we saw 6th grade science students learning about kinetic and potential energy, 7th grade Social Studies students were researching the Roman Empire, 8th grade ELA students were discussing themes from the short story Taco Head, Love on a Leash brought smiles to the office and library, 6th grade Counseling visits got underway during Homeroom, WEB hosted a phenomenal 6th Grade Carnival on Thursday, and students enjoyed playing soccer in the quad with our ASB on Friday. THANK YOU for another amazing week at Twin Peaks Middle School!

Parents, we have both TPMS Foundation and PTSA meetings this week, with the Foundation meeting on Tuesday night at 6pm, and our PTSA meeting at 6:15pm on Thursday - both in the TPMS Library. Please consider attending one of our PTSA or Foundation meetings happening this week and getting involved - they are always a lot of fun and we do great things to support our students!

September is Suicide Prevention Month. To make sure our school community is educated on how to support those who may be dealing with thoughts of suicide, our TPMS Foundation and PTSA have co-sponsored a learning opportunity for our staff, students and parents. The With Hope - Amber Craig Foundation will be on campus this week to provide our staff and students with an in-person presentation, and an online presetation for our TPMS parents and community members.

The parent presentation is happening online this Wednesday night, September 16th, starting at 5pm. To join the Micorsoft teams meeting, please CLICK HERE to access the waiting room. (Meeting ID #: 265 818 402 377 010; Passcode: oo6Qo2eQ) The parent presentation will last about an hour, and we hope to be able to post the recording of the presentation on our school website for families to access at their convenience later.

Our current 7th and 8th grade students will take part in this presentation Thursday and Friday during their PE classes. All of our counseling staff will be making themselves available these two days to support students and staff, as we recognize that this presentation touches on a painful topic. Thank you in advance for your participation and engagement with this topic; learning these tools is a critical step in keeping our community safe and supported.

Don't stop reading here!! Some of the other items of interest to read about in this week's newsletter include:

Pictures of the Week Pictures of the Week

This week Principal Mills visited Ag Science and had a chance to hang out with some students and learn about the giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach! On Friday, ASB set up goals in the quad and students had an opportunity to play some 4v4 soccer for 5 Star points! If you look closely in the background, we even had some students jump up on the stage when the Macarena came on and start dancing!

Our 7th and 8th grade students will take part in an important and engaging presentation by With Hope, The Amber Craig Foundation focusing on suicide prevention during their PE class on Thursday, September 17th and Friday, September 18th.

The purpose of the presentation is to educate, equip, and empower students regarding suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Research shows that suicide is preventable through education and awareness. Patti Ferraro from With Hope will provide students with facts about suicide, alert them to warning signs related to suicide, and provide them with information about how to seek help for themselves or others.

This workshop is approximately 45 minutes in length during your student’s PE class. Our counselors, mental health therapist, student services specialist, and school psychologists will be available to assist students who need additional support during and after the presentation.

To help families make an educated decision on whether this student presentation is appropriate for your student, we encourage you to review the information on the With Hope, The Amber Craig Memorial Foundation website and to attend the parent/guardian workshop hosted by With Hope on Wednesday, September 16th from 5-6pm via Microsoft Teams. (CLICK HERE to access the waiting room. Meeting ID #: 265 818 402 377 010; Passcode: oo6Qo2eQ)

The Twin Peaks staff will take part in a presentation during professional time the morning of Wednesday, September 16th.

If you do NOT give permission for your student to attend the presentation, please email Nicole Hunting, Principal Mills' assistant, at nhunting@powayusd.com by Monday, September 14th. Please make sure to include your student’s name in your email.

The presentations are possible due to the generous support of the Twin Peaks PTSA and Foundation.

As the new school year begins, many students will be riding bicycles, e-bikes, skateboards, and scooters to school. To give everyone time to transition, all students may park on campus without a permit through August 31st. Beginning Tuesday, September 1st, a valid permit will be mandatory.

Safety, Walk Zones & Parking

  • State Helmet Law (CA VC 21212): All riders under 18 must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet at all times when riding any vehicle.
  • Mandatory Walk Zones: Safety protocols begin at the intersection of Twin Peaks Rd. and Tierra Bonita. Students must walk or carry their vehicles in all areas in front of Twin Peaks Middle School, Tierra Bonita Elementary, in our parking lot, and anywhere on campus. Riding on walkways or in parking lots is strictly prohibited.
  • Designated Bike Parking: All vehicles must be parked in the designated bike area, located through the gate to the far right of campus as you face the school.
  • Securing Vehicles & Lock Advice: TPMS is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen property. We strongly encourage students to use heavy-duty U-locks—especially for e-bikes—as cable locks are easily cut.

Vehicle Restrictions & Prohibited Vehicles

  • Prohibited Vehicles: E-scooters and motorized scooters are strictly prohibited for middle schoolers under Poway law and CA Vehicle Code (which require a valid driver’s license to operate).
  • Allowed E-Bikes: Only Class 1 (pedal-assist) and Class 2 (throttle-assisted) e-bikes capped at a maximum motorized speed of 20 mph are allowed on campus.
  • Banned E-Bikes: Class 3 e-bikes (speeds up to 28 mph) are illegal for anyone under 16 and are strictly banned. Modified "e-motos" or dirt bikes are also banned. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (Poway Station) will conduct random sweeps throughout the year; unpermitted or illegal bikes are subject to impound.

How to Obtain a Permit

  • Bicycles, Skateboards & Push Scooters: Register for a standard TPMS permit via the "Parent" section of the school website.
  • E-Bike Permits (Separate Steps): Go to the "Parent" section on the TPMS website to complete the following:
    1. Watch the mandatory PUSD safety video with your student.
    2. Submit the official PUSD Request Form to the Assistant Principal’s office.
    3. Permanently affix the approved permit sticker to the e-bike frame.

This year, we're excited to launch our Give a Book, Grow a Reader! campaign to help build an even stronger school library for our middle school students.

We invite each family to donate one new book to our library. Every book added to our shelves opens the door to new adventures, fresh perspectives, and lifelong learning.

A vibrant library does more than provide books—it creates opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop empathy, strengthen literacy skills, and experience the joy of reading for pleasure. Together, we can foster a school culture where reading is celebrated, curiosity is encouraged, and every student can find a book that speaks to them.

Thank you for helping us grow our library, inspire our readers, and make a lasting difference—one book at a time!
