Leadership Tip of the Day from Leadershift by John Maxwell

"As a young leader, I was focused on how people could help me, not on how I could add value to them. As leaders, our question each day should not be, 'Will I reap a harvest?' Instead it should be, 'Have I sowed seeds today?' Good leaders shift from being self-focused to others-focused."

"Every day I look at my calendar and ask myself, 'Where can I add value today?'"

Teaching Tip of the Day from The Conductor's Companion

The Why of Interpretation by William Berz (p. 8).

Many conductors focus their comments regarding musicality and interpretation in rehearsals by simply giving directions: play louder, play softer, play shorter, slow down here, etc. Instead of constantly giving directions, ask students why they should play louder or softer or why would the composer indicate a rallentando? The questions can be endless.

Quote of the Day

"The sound you have in your head is the sound you'll make."--John Paynter (Great director at Northwestern for many years.)

This advice is great for band directors as well. What sound for your band do you have in your head?

Joke of the Day
