State Report Card: Some Big Wins for HHCS

When the state report card was released September 15, it included some big wins for Huber Heights City Schools. The numbers indicate sustained positive progress, especially in the last four years. The graduation rate is up; chronic absenteeism is down. The number of progress stars has doubled in the last three years. All five elementary schools have been recognized by the Governor's office for Science of Reading progress. HHCS families can feel good about the direction in which the district is heading.

Anatomy Students Dissect Human Bodies (Virtually)

Angela Brassfield's human anatomy students at Wayne are using newly purchased Anatomage tablets to enhance their understanding of anatomical directional terms and planes. The tablets allow students to visualize anatomical structures and create virtual dissections of the human body. Students have expressed great enthusiasm for using this interactive technology to support their learning experience.

Homecoming: Big Tradition, Big Win for Warriors

Homecoming Week is a great Huber Heights community tradition, and always great fun, and the 2026 edition was no exception. There was Spirit Week all week (including PJ Day!), the homecoming parade October 7, the homecoming pep assembly October 8, the homecoming game October 9 (a resounding 52-21 Warriors victory over Miamisburg), and the homecoming dance October 10. Wayne graduates formed an alumni band and joined the Marching Warriors on Friday and plenty of other Wayne graduates came home to enjoy the events. Jamier Brown and Brogan Benson were named homecoming king and queen. (Photos by Kristen Amburgey)

Dayton Metro Library Visits Weisenborn

Dayton Metro Library made its second visit of the school year to Weisenborn during October. The library staff created a number of STEM-based activities, button making, and getting students signed up with library cards. Even Principal Rich Thompson got in on the button-making fun. During their two visits to the Weisenborn library, more than 425 students signed up to get library cards!

Warrior Mart Open for 2026–27

The Warrior Mart opened for the first time in October for students during lunch. The Warrior Mart is an opportunity for students to cash in their positive referral points each month to redeem for prizes. The prizes range from chips or candy all the way up to Warrior hoodies and hats. Students earn positive points by being recognized by staff for doing the right thing in the building and with their classwork. Students can spend these points each month, or they can opt to build their balance for some of the larger prizes.

A Note From Principal Pam Krach

It’s been a busy month with lots of learning and fun activities. Our students are working hard to reach their academic goals and push the boundaries of their creativity. Teachers have been introducing new concepts, and the students have settled in and are focused on their learning.

As we move forward, I encourage families to talk with their children each night about what they are learning. Those small conversations and predictable home routines really help support their progress.

I want to extend a huge thank you to our wonderful families, PTO, and staff for your continued partnership. Together, we are building a supportive environment where every child can thrive. Please take a look below at a few highlights and our upcoming events.

First Grade: Hands-on History, Farm, and Fables

In the midst of focusing on phonics, addition, and subtraction, Charles Huber first-graders have enjoyed some incredible hands-on learning this month!

First-graders recently wrapped up the CKLA Knowledge unit on fables with some unforgettable culminating activities. To bring these classic stories to life, students:

  • Sorted "grapes" based on The Fox and the Grapes.
  • Worked collaboratively to build a bigger home after reading The Crowded Noisy House.
  • Tested their balance with a milk pail challenge inspired by The Maid and the Milk Pail.
  • Wrote creative essays sharing what they would do if they owned a goose that laid golden eggs.

A Trip to the Farm

At the beginning of the month, first-graders also visited Learning Tree Farm, a historic nature-based educational center. Students got up close with real farm animals, explored the gardens, and learned firsthand how a working farm operates.

A huge thank you to Charles Huber's wonderful PTO for funding this field trip and allowing students to experience this beautiful learning adventure!

Fire Prevention Fun

On October 12, the Huber Heights Fire Division visited Charles Huber to present a special fire prevention program for kindergarten through second-grade students. Our students had a good time participating in this interactive presentation while learning important lessons about fire safety.

The firefighters taught students how to recognize fire dangers, the importance of having a family escape plan, and what to do if they ever hear a smoke alarm. Students also learned about the importance of staying low under smoke, getting outside quickly, and never going back inside a burning building. The firefighters encouraged students to talk with their families about creating a safe meeting place outside their home in case of an emergency.

Charles Huber is so thankful to the Huber Heights Fire Department for taking the time to visit the school and teach students these life-saving skills.

DOGS, Shoes, and More Excitement at Monticello

Exciting things are happening at Monticello Elementary! We are proud to officially launch our DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program, which kicked off with a successful first meeting. We are excited to see our dads and families stepping up, getting involved, and giving back to our students and school community.

We also recently celebrated another successful Just Another Pair of Shoes event, providing several students with brand-name shoes. This wonderful act of kindness reminds us of the power of giving back and making every student feel valued.

Just Another Pair of Shoes Encourages Monticello Students

Just a Pair of Shoes distributed shoes and socks to 51 Monticello Elementary students Wednesday, October 7.

Matt Cline, founder of the local nonprofit, told the students how a pair of shoes had changed the direction of his life and how new shoes helped build his confidence and self-esteem. Wayne High School football players who volunteered to help learned about the benefits of serving others. The Wayne players lined up in two rows for high-fives as the Monticello students walked a red carpet to the table to receive their shoes, then the players helped each child try on their new shoes and socks to ensure a proper fit.

Cline said Just a Pair of Shoes has distributed more than 4,000 shoes to students in central and southwest Ohio, including at three schools in the Huber Heights City Schools district, since its founding in 2018.

Valley Forge Implements PAX Behavioral Program

Valley Forge Elementary is implementing PAX, a positive behavior support program that helps students build self-regulation skills, make positive choices, and create a safe, focused, and caring learning environment for everyone!

What does PAX look like at school?

PAX focuses on helping students recognize and practice the behaviors that make our classrooms great places to learn. Teachers and students work together to identify PAX behaviors—the positive actions that help everyone learn, feel safe, and show respect. Students also learn to recognize and reduce Spleems—behaviors that interrupt learning or make it harder for others to do their best.

Through fun activities, teamwork, and positive reinforcement, students practice skills such as listening, following directions, being kind, taking turns, and working together. Our goal is to help students build habits that support success both in and out of the classroom.

How can families support PAX at home?

Parents and caregivers play an important role in helping these skills grow! Here are a few simple ways to bring PAX into your home:

  • Notice the positives! Point out and praise behaviors you want to see more often, such as sharing, being helpful, listening, and showing kindness.
  • Set clear expectations. Talk about what a peaceful, respectful, and successful home environment looks and sounds like.
  • Practice self-regulation. Encourage children to pause, take a breath, and make a positive choice when they feel frustrated or upset.
  • Celebrate teamwork. Recognize moments when your child cooperates, solves a problem, or helps someone else.
  • Keep the conversation going. Ask your child about the positive choices they made at school and how they helped others learn and feel safe.

By working together, we can help our students develop the skills they need to be successful learners and caring members of our community. We are excited to see the positive impact PAX will have at Valley Forge Elementary and appreciate your support as we bring these practices into our school community.

Together, we can create a PAX classroom, a PAX school, and a PAX home!

Showing Up Matters!

As Huber Heights City Schools continues to focus on the importance of attendance, Wright Brothers had another reason to celebrate—over 140 WB students have been at school and on time EVERY DAY so far this school year! We took a moment to recognize these students and talk about why showing up every day and being on time matters. Every day at school is another opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of the WB community.

Students of the Month Show Respect

Wright Brothers celebrated its Students of the Month, who demonstrated RESPECT throughout the school. At The WB, being respectful means treating others with kindness, using appropriate words and actions, listening when others are speaking, taking care of the school, and understanding that everyone deserves to feel valued and included. We are so proud of these students for consistently showing respect and being positive examples for others!

Students of the Month who were recognized included Aliah, Asil, Ava, Eli, Joentz, Kay'Arie, Kaylyn, Keira, Lakeshia, Malcom, Maria, Mariam, Mikayla, Scarlett, and Vivian.

Studebaker Preschool Studebaker Preschool

Magnets, Motor Skills Among October Activities

October was a busy month at Studebaker Preschool! Our students concentrated on early literacy by learning their letters, differentiating between lowercase and uppercase, and understanding letter sounds. They also practiced counting and recognizing differences in quantities, shapes, and sizes. Students discussed weather, seasons, and colors, linking them to the vibrant hues of fall.

Tonia Lyttle’s class became magnetic explorers with assistance from Boonshoft Museum of Discovery staff members. The students learned important new words about magnets, like "attract," which means to pull something toward you, and "repel," which means to push something away. These words helped them understand how magnets work and why one side sticks to another while the others push apart.

During their visit, every student in the class got to participate in a fun activity with the occupational therapy and physical therapy specialists. Students began by participating in a guided movement session before being divided into small groups. They alternated between two stations—a craft activity to work on fine motor skills and a task drill to work on gross motor skills. They selected a leaf from a bulletin board and jumped over pumpkins scattered across a “patch.” After leaping over the pumpkins, they deposited their leaves into matching color bins before completing the cycle again.
