Scoutmaster Update

Hello Scouts,

There has been a lot in the news about the "El Niño" weather pattern, which is expected to impact our area this winter. This phenomenon occurs when the Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than usual, potentially resulting in increased rainfall, drought in some areas, and wild weather fluctuations such as high winds and unusual temperature changes.

As Scouts, we can always rely on one of the most important lessons we've learned: to always "Be Prepared."

So, what does this mean for us as Scouts? We need to focus on our Core Weather Principles:

1. Check the forecast before departure: Be aware of the weather in your destination and the types of hazards that may arise.

2. Prepare for specific hazards: Understand the potential risks, such as lightning, rain, hail, flash flooding, high winds, snow, or extreme heat.

3. Verify the conditions upon arrival: Double-check the forecast as soon as you reach your destination. Has anything changed that you need to be aware of?

4. Respond quickly to changing conditions: If the weather worsens, gather everyone together and review your emergency plan.

5. Know the locations of emergency shelters: These can be safe areas within your campsite or even the cars you drove to camp.

Just like in First Aid, and as one of Baden-Powell's principles, "Scouts must think out and practice how to act on any accident or emergency, so they are never taken by surprise." Be Prepared

See you all tonight!

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Wellington

November 11 - Glendora Trail Days - Conservation Service Hours

Glendora Trails Day is Saturday 11/7/26 at Big Dalton Wilderness Park (2041 Big Dalton Canyon Rd, Glendora, CA 91741) starting at 8 am. Check in is at the campground/amphitheater. The event is scheduled from 8 am-12:30 pm, but scouts can stay for as little or as much as they would like. Glendora Trails Day is an ongoing service program sponsored by Glendora Trails Committee, the Glendora Rotary Club and the City to help clean up and maintain trails in Glendora. Scouts will help maintain trails and the time spent will count as conservation service hours.

Scouts should wear Class B uniform for this outing. Individuals are asked to bring gloves, water, sunscreen and bug repellent (and probably a snack depending on how long you plan to participate). Participants should wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and a hat. Each participant will receive a free commemorative patch and lunch (depending on how long you stay and when the Rotary starts serving lunch) for helping their local environment. Tools are provided by the city.

Mr. Mason and Mr. Ferrer are providing troop leadership for the troop’s participation in the community service project. Family members can also participate in the service project if they wish. Scouts need to bring the City of Glendora Waiver form (attached). Scouts should check in with Mr. Mason or Mr. Ferrer when they arrive. We expect to be assigned a trail shortly after 8 am, so if scouts arrive and we are not in the campground, they should ask someone at the check in which trail Troop 483 is assigned to and join us. Questions can go to Mr. Mason and if you need to reach him the day of the outing, please call or text him at 626-825-4093. Please sign up at the link below.
