Members noted that these responsibilities often require taking time away from work. Members also acknowledged that serving on the Board represents a lifestyle change and involves holding a highly visible public position.
It was noted that the Board is among the lower-paid Boards in the state and that compensation has not been updated since 2009. The Board discussed that increasing compensation could help attract new candidates.
Following discussion, the Board voted to submit a request for a local bill during the 2026 Maryland General Legislative Session to increase the annual Caroline County Board of Education Member compensation from $4,000 for Board President and $3,500 for Board Members to $6,000 for Board President and $5,500 for Board Members annually during the 2026 Legislative Session.
