Topic 2- Ingeters and Rational Numbers

In our new unit, students will explore positive and negative numbers, including fractions and decimals. They will represent and compare rational numbers on a number line and use absolute value to describe distance from zero. We’ll then move to the coordinate plane, where students will graph points, find distances, and represent polygons. Throughout the unit, students will use number lines and coordinate graphs to show their thinking, explain how they know an answer makes sense, and apply these skills to problems involving positive and negative numbers and distance.

Polygons on the Coordinate Plane.

This week, students will:

  • Identify and graph points with integer, fraction, and decimal coordinates.

  • Find horizontal and vertical distances between points using coordinates and absolute value.

  • Plot and connect vertices to represent polygons on the coordinate plane.

  • Use distances between vertices to find side lengths and perimeters.

  • Use math vocabulary, coordinate graphs, and models to explain their thinking.

Practice and Resources for Support

Completing homework gives students valuable practice and helps strengthen their understanding. Continued practice converting between fractions and decimals is helpful when graphing rational coordinates. Please encourage your student to use their class notes to support their work and ask questions when they need help.

Students can also access their digital textbook through Google Classroom for additional examples and resources. The videos linked below provide further explanations and practice with this week’s concepts.

Work Habits Work Habits

Building positive work habits can make a meaningful difference in a student’s academic growth. While students receive a weekly Work Habits grade for completing homework and turning it in responsibly, they will also receive Work Habits grades for how they use class time and complete their in-class responsibilities. We have spent time discussing what it looks like to earn a 4. If your student receives a 2 or below, I would like them to check in with me so we can work together to find strategies that will help them be successful.

Homework This Week

Students can access this week’s homework through the Clever portal by clicking on Savvas.

  • Complete problems 1–16 and submit all answers online only.

  • No paper submission is required this week. Students are encouraged to use scratch paper to show their work and organize their thinking.

Students receive a weekly Work Habits grade based on their work completion and effort. Practicing these skills at home helps strengthen understanding and prepare students for quizzes.
