October Soroptimist Students of the Month
Clayton Hall
Congratulations to Clayton Hall, October’s Soroptimist Student of the Month! Clayton is a senior at Sedro-Woolley High School and is the son of Jennifer and Wil Hall. After graduation, Clayton plans to attend Whatcom Community College to earn his Associate of Applied Science degree and certifications in Hospitality and Tourism. His goal is to apply for a position as a flight attendant, where he can combine his passion for travel, customer service, and helping others.
Clayton says that his involvement in Business and Marketing CTE courses (shoutout to Ms. Kelly and Ms. Bolser!) has helped significantly in shaping his future career goals. He says that Leadership class has also “taught me how to be an effective and compassionate leader, inspiring me to pursue a career where I can make a positive difference in people’s lives.”
When it comes to involvement in school activities, Clayton is everywhere! He is a member of the Usher Club, active in ViV (Varsity in Volunteerism) and CAMP(Cubs Advocating for Mental Health and Prevention). He’s also editor in chief of The Cub News, an NCTA student, and an Eagle Scout.
Clayton, congratulations on your many accomplishments, and thank you for the joyful heart of service you have brought to everything you do at SWHS!
Kaleah Westergard
Congratulations to Kaleah Westergard, October’s Soroptimist Student of the Month! Kaleah is the daughter of Jessica Reggiatore and Jeff Westergard and a senior at Sedro-Woolley High School. Kaleah has been accepted to DigiPen Institute of Technology and plans to attend after graduation to study Computer Science and Game Design. Kaleah says that her CTE classes “have helped me build a stronger work ethic, helped me learn better prioritization and time management, and they let me figure out new things about myself and what I like to do.” Kaleah is highly involved at SWHS, participating in both band (she plays trumpet and French horn) and ASB. She has also been involved in filming and programming at the school. She is an avid board game lover and enjoys art, music, and playing DND. When asked what advice she would give to new high school students, Kaleah says “Have fun, do all the hoco events, join clubs, be involved! I’ve heard from too many kids who only did things senior year that they regret not participating sooner. I held back on being in ASB and I really wish I had joined sooner.” Kaleah, thank you for all the ways you’ve invested in making SWHS a better place. Congrats on this well deserved recognition!
Glowing Science at Cascade Middle School
Cascade Middle School science teacher Heather Hirschi lit up her classroom—literally—during a Halloween-themed sublimation demonstration. Dressed as a “mad scientist,” Hirschi used dry ice, water, glycerin, Dawn soap, and black lights to show how solids can turn directly into gas. Students safely observed as fog swirled, glowing highlighter ink illuminated the room, and gas bubbles formed and floated through the air.
Samish Students Visit Central Skagit Library
Samish Elementary students took a field trip to the Central Skagit Library this week to learn more about how to access books and resources in their community. Thanks to a memorandum of understanding between the Sedro-Woolley School District and the library, all district students are eligible for a free library card.
During their visit, students learned how to use the library’s search system, discovered what the color-coded labels on books mean, and spent time exploring the children’s play area. Each student was able to check out one book during the trip—and if they return with a guardian, they can check out up to five books (or even request more!).
The Central Skagit Library is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families are encouraged to stop by often, check out books together, and help nurture a lifelong love of reading.
Mary Purcell Sixth Graders Dig Into Owl Science
Sixth grade students in Mrs. Quatsoe’s class at Mary Purcell Elementary recently got a closer look at what owls eat—by dissecting owl pellets. Mrs. Quatsoe collected the pellets herself to ensure each student had one to explore. Inside, students discovered fur, bones, and other remains from small rodents the owls had eaten and digested.
The activity gave students a unique, hands-on way to connect classroom lessons about food chains and ecosystems to the real world—and sparked plenty of curiosity (and a few surprised reactions) along the way!
Exploring Careers Through Hands-On Learning
Students from State Street High School and Sedro-Woolley High School took part in the WAVE (Washington Apprenticeship Vocational Experience) tour last week, exploring a variety of careers in the skilled trades.
Students built metal toolboxes with Western Sheet Metal, learned about construction with LiUNA Northwest Laborers Training, explored electrical apprenticeships with JATC Electrician Apprenticeship, used a virtual backhoe simulator with the Operating Engineers Regional Training Program, and learned about lightweight boat design with Aspen Power Catamarans.
The WAVE tour helps students connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities and gain valuable insight into career pathways that keep our communities strong.

District joins Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP)
Great news for our students and families! Sedro-Woolley School District has partnered with WAGAP — the Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program.
WAGAP gives qualifying high school seniors automatic admission to participating Washington public universities. This means that students who meet the academic requirements are guaranteed acceptance — they don’t need to apply through the traditional competitive admissions process.
Participating universities include:
- Western Washington University (WWU)
- Central Washington University (CWU)
- Eastern Washington University (EWU)
- The Evergreen State College
- Washington State University (WSU)
- University of Washington – Tacoma (UW Tacoma)
To qualify, students must:
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (equivalent to a “B” average)
- Complete the required College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs) — these are the high school classes that colleges require for admission, such as English, math, science, social studies, world languages, and fine arts.
Each fall, juniors and seniors who meet or are on track to meet these qualifications will be notified of their eligibility for guaranteed admission.
This is an incredible opportunity for our college-bound students to plan their futures with confidence. We’re proud to bring this program to Sedro-Woolley!
👉 Learn more about WAGAP at wacollegeguarantee.org.

SWHS students: Apply to be part of National Honor Society
It’s that time of year to apply to be a member of Sedro-Woolley High School’s National Honor Society Chapter. The Sedro-Woolley High School National Honor Society Chapter currently has 72 members! Last year, 32 seniors from the class of 2025 graduated with NHS recognition, and we are excited to add new members!
Use the QR Code to access the requirements and application process (maintain a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA, while taking at least two advanced courses each year - Running Start and some CTE pathways count). Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply as well as HiCap freshmen taking Honors 10 English and one other advanced course.
(Please note: Students must be signed into their student email account to fill out this form.)
NHS application submission deadline is Friday, November 7.
Please Note: This is not affiliated with SWHS Honor Roll.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
