Stars Excel After Some Time Off
The precipitation has caused some delays in the Stars' schedule as of late. After a canceled meet two-weeks ago on Thursday, as well as a cancelled meet last week, the Stars had to make each meet they ran in count as they prepare for the last few weeks of their season.
The rest of the boy's team ran at South Sioux City the next week were they would run a strong race. The Varsity teams were split between South Sioux and Sioux Center that week to allow our very strong JV team to get some Varsity level competition. This meet the boys were led by Logan Bonnes who placed 23rd overall with a time of 17:57. Just behind Logan was Mathew Garcia Perez who ran a strong race with a time of 18:14 and a 32nd place finish. Asher Amman placed 38th overall and would run just behind Garcia Perez with a time of 18:22. Winston Palmer and Beckett Beller would anchor the stars placing 46th and 52nd overall running 18:32 and 18:38 respectively.
The varsity boy's team would then run at Sioux Center on Saturday where they would finish as the meet runner-ups. The boys were led by Kuma Gutema who would cruise to a 1st place finish with a time of 15:42.Freshman Nebiyu Kifle would place 8th for the stars in a time of 16:45, continuing his stellar freshman campaign. Junior Leo Wheelock placed 10th for the stars in a time of 17:00! Rounding out the stars for the day were Josue Gutierrez and Lamek Gafo. Josue finished in 13 place with a time of 17:17 and Lamek finished 28th place with a time of 18:18.
Due to the inclement weather, the girls' team only ran once race in the past two-weeks, but the ladies made sure to come prepared! The girls ran at South Sioux City on Thursday. The stars were led by senior Jackie Garcia-Perez who ended running a personal best by over 1 minute and 20 seconds! The senior was waiting for her opportunity to step up and she certainly did. Garcia_Perez placed 31st overall in a time of 22:27. Freshman Autumn Sorensen had another great race as Sorensen placed 37th overall in a time of 22:50. Eighth grade runner, Anna Diserhaupt, had another great performance as she ran her personal best this season with a time of 23 minutes! Khloe Eliesa and Melody Kenney were just behind Anna as they placed 47th and 51st overall with times of 23:11 and 23:30. Mady Prevail anchored the stars with a time of 24:57.
The stars will run their next meet on Thursday at the Fort Dodge.
Football
Stars Take it Down to the Wire
The Football team had another two good weeks of competition as they took on Des Moines Lincoln and Urbandale. The stars played Des Moines Lincoln for their Homecoming game and the fans were in for a treat that night. It was back and forth throughout the 48-minutes of regulation, however, Des Moines Lincoln would come away as the victors with a final score of 27-17. The stars were led by Junior Finn Kuehl who would run in a 68 yard foot race-touchdown! Finn would rack up another 32 yards totaling over 100 yards on the day. Trey Henry also was productive by racking up 111 yards himself as well as a touchdown. Henry also racked up 13 tackles and 2-forced fumbles that game, showing his utility as a player. Andrew and Zach Hagan helped defensively as they racked up 13.5 and 9.5 tackles themselves. Colton McClellan had another nice showing as he went 18/23 for 267 yards and 2 touchdowns!
The varsity team then took on Urbandale. Going into the half, the stars played a great game, holding off Urbandale to just a 1-score lead. However, with some players injured, the lack of depth caught up to the stars as Urbandale pulled away. The stars would fall to Urbandale by a score of 66-13.
The stars play West Des Moines Valley this week on Friday.
Volleyball
Stars Sweep on Senior Night
The next game would be senior night where we honor our players and their commitment to the program! The Volleyball team would like to extend a big thank you to the seniors who have helped build the program these last four years; the four seniors are Chloe Cross, Alexa Hayes, ZaRiyah VanBuren, and Hayden Embrock.
The stars take on Lewis Central on Tuesday at Lewis Central on Tuesday.
Swimming
North Girls Shine Across the State
The Metro swim team had three meets the past two-weeks where we saw strong performances from our swimmers. The metro team travelled to West Des Moines Valley for the Tiger Tankers Invitational. This meet featured some of the best teams in the state. The Metro girls put together an impressive performance, finishing 4th overall behind Dowling Catholic, Waukee Northwest, and WDM Valley. Lily Harder had a great day in the pool, placing 6th in the 100-yard Backstroke and 7th in the 200-yard Individual Medley. Harder and Rylee Rustwick also helped lead the 400-yard Freestyle Relay and 200-yard Freestyle Relay teams to 4th-place finishes in both events.
T
he girls then had a dual against Lewis Central where Harder turned in another strong performance, earning 2nd place in both the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle. She also helped the 200-yard Medley Relay capture 1st place and the 200-yard Freestyle Relay finish 2nd. Rustwick added valuable points for the Metros, placing 2nd in the 200-yard Freestyle and 3rd in the 100-yard Breaststroke. She was also a member of the 200-yard and 400-yard Freestyle Relay teams, which both finished 2nd.
Carlie Gabriel took on the 500-yard Freestyle and raced to a 2nd-place finish while setting a new personal record. She was also a key contributor to the 400-yard Freestyle Relay. Harper Rohlena had a great meet as well, recording personal-best times in both the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard Backstroke, while also contributing to two 3rd-place relay finishes.
The girls ended their week of competition by competing in the annual Mickey Olson Invite, hosted by the Metro Team in honor of former coach Mickey Olson. The girls brought another strong showing. Harder and Rustwick led the way with an impressive 1-2 finish in the 500-yard Freestyle, placing 1st and 2nd, respectively. Rustwick also helped the 200-yard Freestyle Relay race to a 1st-place finish. Harper Rohlena continued her strong season by setting another personal record, this time in the 100-yard Freestyle.
The girls return to action on October 15th at Spencer.
Golf
Frankele Punches Ticket to State
The boys golf team had two competitions in the last two-weeks. The first compeition was the MRAC conference championship where they placed 5th overall as a team. The stars were led by Seth Frankele who scored a 70 and got 3rd place overall. Logan Salmon placed behind him getting 83, while Braden Kumm, Alex Hexom, and Talyn Sheffy scored 84, 85, and 86 respectively.
Frankele would continue to shine for the stars on Monday as he competed in the district meet where players are fighting for their chance to compete at the Golf state championships. Frankele would traverse the course with poise and end up shooting a 71, getting 2nd place overall, and punching his shot at the state tournament!
Seth competes at state next week at his shot at a state championship, good luck Seth!
Cheer
Two weeks ago, the North High Cheer Team had a busy and exciting Homecoming week. The team hosted its annual Mini Cheer Camp, participated in the Homecoming Parade, and cheered at the Homecoming game despite the rainy weather. Unfortunately, the rain forced the team to postpone the Mini Camp performance until last week’s game against Urbandale. The weather didn’t dampen the spirit of the mini campers though! They returned to perform a dance and two cheers for the crowd! The cheer team also introduced a new dice game for the student section to play during timeouts, bringing even more energy to the game. Fans can look forward to seeing the dice game back in action at the Pink Out game on October 23! The cheer team will be on the road the next two weeks at away games in Des Moines.

Tennis
Lioa Earns State Alternate Spot
After coming off of a great MRAC tournament, the Tennis team was gearing up for the district tournament in hopes to clinch a spot at the State meet. Iris Liao was North's top scorer on the day. Liao won her first match by a score of 2-0 against an opponent from West Des Moines Valley. Iris then played an opponent from Urbandale in which she won the first set, but would lose the next two. Unfortunately, once Iris lost this match she also lost her chance to play at the state meet. However, Iris would rally back and defeat her next opponent from AL 2-0 to get third place and earn a state alternate spot. This win from Iris avenged a loss from earlier in the season!
The girls team then played at team districts where they took on East High School. The stars would ultimately lose to the Black Raiders, ending their season.
The girls took another step forward this year and the school is proud of how far they have come. Great job ladies!
