WELCOME TO THE 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR! WELCOME TO THE 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR!

We hope that you have been enjoying the summer and finding plenty of time to relax and have fun with friends and family. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the students back to school in two weeks on Tuesday, September 2nd!

The team at KES has been actively and excitedly planning and preparing for our students during the summer months. We are looking forward to ā€œBuilding a Community of Belongingā€ this year by getting to know our students, learning and growing together within a welcoming, affirming school environment and joyful classroom settings.

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about the progress we've made over the summer break with the renovation to our Library and STREAM Lab. We anticipate being able to utilize this new space as early as this fall. This will undoubtedly provide our students with a fresh and inspiring environment to learn and explore.

Additionally, all classrooms have been outfitted with new air conditioning wall units. This upgrade will help keep our spaces comfortable during those hot days, ensuring a better learning atmosphere for everyone.

We've also been preparing our building for the new Geothermal system. Inside, ceiling units have been installed, while outside, all the wells have been completed. The next step involves "grouting," where a trench will be excavated to connect the lines from the building to the wells on our back field. We anticipate grading the field this fall, with the hope of seeding the surface next spring.

We are pleased to report that a new boiler system was installed over the summer. It will be up and running by the time school opens, ensuring we are well-prepared for the colder months ahead.

Exciting news for our faculty as well – a new washroom has been installed on the upper floor, providing added convenience for our team.

At the beginning of each month, you will receive a KES Newsletter with current information about our programs and curriculum. A 'Calendar of Events' (see above) will be included to ensure you are well informed of the meetings as well as exciting and enriching activities and celebrations taking place at school. Please be on the lookout for the next newsletter on September 5.

The purpose of this communication is to provide you with important information that will help your family plan for the beginning of school.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE SEE THE SECTION BELOW ON OUR DISTRICT'S NEW SYSTEM FOR REPORTING ABSENCES AND DISMISSAL. YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY AUGUST 25. ANY STUDENT WHO IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE SYSTEM WILL BE SENT HOME ON THE BUS AS THE DEFAULT DISMISSAL SETTING.

Our Main Office is here to support you and answer your questions. You can reach the main office at 763-7700. Our office staff members include Mrs. Tara Duffy, Secretary to the Principal (7702), and Mrs. Maria Horton, Office Assistant (7709).

NEW: REPORTING ABSENCES AND DISMISSAL- VISITOR AWARE

Safety is our top priority, and therefore, we must ensure that each student is accounted for at the ending of each day in accordance with what you have planned.

This year, the district is implementing a new system for reporting absences and dismissal using VISITOR AWARE. This is also where you will set your default dismissal plans (Monday-Friday) and make any change of your daily dismissal plan on any given day that your child's dismissal is different from the default.

Please register your child(ren) using the VISITOR AWARE DISMISSAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM by MONDAY, AUGUST 25.

ANY STUDENT WHO IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE SYSTEM WILL BE SENT HOME ON THE BUS AS THE DEFAULT DISMISSAL SETTING. PLEASE CONTACT THE MAIN OFFICE WITH ANY QUESTIONS- WE ARE HAPPY TO HELP!!

See the button below for a link to directions to reporting absences, setting dismissal default for each day of the week and making daily changes to dismissal plans.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR VISITOR AWARE

Dismissal Times and Locations

P.M. Parent Pick-Up Location:

When picking up children at dismissal time, park in the lot across the street from the school or on Huntville Road in the designated spots and walk to the ā€œArt Room Aā€ entrance (double doors closest to Huntville Road). Doors will be open from 3:35-3:45 p.m.

Early Pick-Ups:

Children picked up early from school will dismiss from the Main Office; you may not pick-up your child between 3:15 p.m.-3:40 p.m.

Walkers:

Walkers are those students who are not assigned to a school bus and/or live within reasonable distance (1 mile) from school. These children are dismissed between 3:30-3:40 p.m. at the lower sidewalk.

Bus Riders and Playdates

Each September, we take the time to teach and practice daily routines. To help students learn their daily dismissal plan and routine, which includes helping students get to know their bus number and bus drivers, student bus riders may only ride their assigned bus during the month of September.

We will begin honoring individual playdates (riding a different bus) in October. If the bus is over capacity, bus notes for playdates cannot be honored.

If you have a special circumstance (childcare needs), please contact Maria Horton in our main office 763-7709.

  • Can my child wear a smart watch in School/Airplane Mode? Smartwatches must be powered off and stored during the school day. "School modeā€ or ā€œairplane modeā€ are also not allowed.

  • How can I contact my child during the school day? Parents and guardians may contact their children during the school day by calling the main office at the school.

KES P.A.W.S. EXPECTATIONS: Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Safety

As a school community, we work toward establishing an atmosphere where children can learn and develop academically, socially, and emotionally. We embed social and emotional learning opportunities into the classroom and school-wide to help students build relationships, identify and manage emotions, and develop a growth mindset. Morning Meeting is a time where students come together as a class to learn, discuss, and practice these skills, while connecting with each other and their teachers. Through these and other approaches, such as monthly school-wide sharing assemblies, we teach and reinforce positive behavior.

KES' expectations derive from our KES PAWSome Pledge.

At KES we...

Practice Respect

Accept Responsibility

We Choose Kindness

Safety Comes First

KES is PAWSome!

Explicitly teaching these behaviors helps students to understand what is expected to create a positive environment. Our school expectation matrix linked below displays P.A.W.S. expectations across school settings. At the beginning of each school year, and throughout, classroom teachers facilitate the process of identifying respectful, responsible, kind and safe expectations with students. These expectations are reinforced with a classroom system to recognize positive behaviors as students demonstrate them. Similarly, expectations are taught, reviewed and positively reinforced in special classes, lunch and recess, and on the buses.

Communication from the classroom teacher will be sent home when a student is experiencing a particular challenge in meeting the expectations. We know that the home and school connection is critically important to supporting our students. Additionally, we believe in teaching students how to learn from their mistakes and use positive reinforcement to guide them in modifying their behavior.

KES P.A.W.S. EXPECTATIONS MATRIX

Lunch and Recess Experience

Lunch and recess are intentionally less structured than our instructional settings. However, this time of day can bring up issues, so consistent routines and structures are necessary.

Please review the "Expected Behaviors" slides for lunch and recess with your children, linked below. We believe a strong partnership between home and school is crucial for communicating these expectations.

We will maintain predictable routines during lunch and recess. Each class will have designated sections in the cafeteria, and our incentive system will acknowledge expected behaviors.

Throughout the year, each grade level will have multiple opportunities to earn open seating and other rewards based on our K-5 behavioral point system. To ensure variety, table assignments will change periodically, allowing students to sit with different peers, just like in the classroom.
